More Segregation in Bitcoin! Improved Script to Ban Blacklisted Nodes

On September 19, 2025, Noosphere888 released version 1.1.0 of Ban-Knots, a script available on GitHub that simplifies node management and shutdown in Bitcoin Knots, an implementation of the Bitcoin software. The update aims to make it easier to use on platforms like Start9 and Umbrel, amid ongoing debates about the use of blacklists on the Bitcoin network.

Version 1.1.0 of Ban-Knots introduces improvements that make it easier to use, especially for non-technical users. According to the release notes posted on GitHub, the script now automatically detects the .cookie Bitcoin Core authentication file, eliminating the need to manually enter credentials.

It also incorporates specific support for Start9 and Umbrel, two popular Bitcoin node platforms, with automatic environment detection and simplified installation commands. Additionally, bugs affecting passwords with special characters and execution in automated tasks have been fixed, making the script more robust.

However, the most relevant aspect of Ban-Knots lies not in its technical improvements, but in its purpose: to facilitate the blocking of Bitcoin Knots nodes considered undesirable.

As we reported, a developer named Noosphere888 created a blacklist of reachable Bitcoin Knots nodes, which raised concerns in the community. These lists allow users to disconnect from specific nodes, which could be used to locally exclude certain participants from the transaction relay process.

For example, using nodes that do not comply with certain rules or that are perceived as problematic. Noosphere888 summarizes the usefulness of his protocol by admonishing: "do not connect to nodes that do not relay your valid transactions", likely referring to those transactions that use OP_RETURN to include arbitrary content, whose excess weight in the block space is not accepted by Bitcoin Knots policies.

This practice has sparked debates about decentralization and freedom on the Bitcoin network, as selective blocking is useful in defending certain monetary and philosophical interests, but does not easily align with the founding principles of the cryptoasset.

The script, created and updated by Noosphere888, allows Bitcoin Knots users to run commands to shut down or ban specific nodes. The new version simplifies this process with a more intuitive installation and clearer error messages, which could increase its adoption.

The controversy over blacklists is not new, but the ease of implementation that Ban-Knots 1.1.0 offers could amplify their impact.

While some users see these tools as a way to protect the network from nodes that are not optimized to relay transactions from Bitcoin Core, the main Bitcoin client, others warn that they could be used to segregate or create divisions in the network.

It's worth noting that Knots employs stricter transaction filtering policies, so this client doesn't retransmit transactions that are valid in Core.

In this sense, it can be argued that the nodes of both clients are segregated from each other, which has had no consequences because Bitcoin Core has a significant majority of nodes and its policy is more permissive.

However, if Ban-Knots adoption were to become widespread and Bitcoin Knots persisted with its strict filters, the battle between clients could lead to more tangible problems for Bitcoin, such as significant delays in the inclusion of transactions in blocks.

For now, Ban-Knots remains a technical tool that, while useful for certain node administrators, raises questions about the balance between control and decentralization in Bitcoin.
