Japanese investment firm Metaplanet purchased an additional 1,088 BTC today, June 2, 2025. This brings the company's total holdings to 8,888 BTC (equivalent to approximately $930 million).
This recent Bitcoin acquisition cost Metaplanet 16.885 billion Japanese yen (approximately $117.5 million), and the BTC were acquired at a price of $108,051. The financing was achieved through the issuance of bonds, following a strategy similar to that of the American firm Strategy, led by Michael Saylor.
With these moves, Metaplanet is rapidly approaching its goal of having 10,000 bitcoins in its treasury before the end of 2025.
At the time of this publication, Metaplanet is the tenth publicly traded company in the world with the most bitcoin in its treasury, surpassing Block. This can be seen in the following table provided by the Bitcoin Treasuries website, which has not yet been updated:

The number chosen wasn't random. In Japanese culture, the number 8 (八, hachi ) has a positive and auspicious connotation. This is due to its graphic form: the kanji's lines fan out to the sides, which is symbolically interpreted as expansion, growth, or prosperity. Unlike other numbers that can have negative meanings (such as 4 or 9), 8 is considered good luck in contexts such as business, celebrations, and numerology.
In Japanese, the number 8 is phonetically neutral: it's pronounced hachi, with no direct associations with negative words, unlike 4 (shi, which sounds like "death") or 9 (ku, which can sound like "pain" or "suffering"). This reinforces its use in product names, brands, and room or telephone numbers when seeking to convey a positive image.
In May, Metaplanet had accumulated 5,555 bitcoin, a figure that in Japanese is read as "go, go, go, go, go" (a sound that, in English, is interpreted as "Go, go, go, go, go!").
