Japan Turns its Back on Bitcoin for its National Reserve – What Happened?

The Japanese government has rejected a proposal to create a national bitcoin reserve, responding to a request from Senator Satoshi Hamada.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said it is difficult for the government to express its views on creating a strategic bitcoin reserve due to a lack of detailed understanding of the issue.

This response came after Hamada's request in mid-December, in which he asked the government to evaluate the possibility of establishing a BTC reserve for the Asian country.

The Japanese government indicated that it does not have a clear understanding of the moves of the United States and other countries at this stage. They noted that they are still in the process of discussing how other nations are handling the introduction of bitcoin reserves, leading them to conclude that it is “difficult for the government to express its views” on this specific matter.

Prime Minister Ishiba also clarified that under the current legal framework, bitcoin and other cryptoassets are not considered currencies. He stressed that the existing reserves are intended to stabilize the markets for assets and bonds denominated in foreign currencies.

He further reiterated that the security and liquidity of foreign exchange reserves are the top priority in managing the special account, hinting that the volatility inherent in cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin , does not align with the current reserve system.

Ishiba’s official response reflects a cautious stance by the Japanese government in the face of domestic and international discussions about integrating crypto assets into national reserve strategies.

This caution comes despite the global trend towards Bitcoin reserves. The United States appears to be moving towards creating its own BTC reserve under Donald Trump's administration.

Trump promised in July to establish this reserve and there is speculation that he could use an Executive Order for its immediate implementation, with a draft of this order already in place.

In addition to the plan at the federal level, there is growing interest in the US states, with so far four states considering forming their own bitcoin treasuries, namely Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas and Alabama.

The debate over Bitcoin reserves continues to grow and more news and developments on this topic are expected to emerge in 2025, which could influence the policies of other countries, including Japan, to re-evaluate their stance on BTC as reserve assets.
