An anonymous donor has chosen Cuba as the recipient of a donation of $1,000 in bitcoin (BTC), highlighting how this digital currency is becoming a symbol of freedom and solidarity on the Caribbean island.
This contribution came from an initiative of the Mi Primer Bitcoin foundation and aims to support the adoption of the digital asset in Cuba, triggering a push for education about Bitcoin in various cities in the country.
The foundation has what they have called "Node Network" or groups of educators who teach the teaching and fundamentals of bitcoin, based on the educational structure of the organization that was born in El Salvador.
The election of Cuba as a beneficiary was not arbitrary, but the result of a vote that involved the so-called nodes and was based on the largest amount of PoW or proof of work achieved in recent months.
“After a 2-week voting session, the nodes chose Cuba Bitcoin as the winner of the Node Grant,” the foundation stated on its X social network account.
The grant will help Cuba Bitcoin expand; In addition, it will allow teaching about bitcoin in two cities simultaneously for the first time, says the foundation.
Currently, Mi Primer Bitcoin has taken its course around the world and now there are almost 20 countries, most of them located in Latin America.
Bitcoin, a Lifeline in the Midst of the Crisis
Cuba today faces major obstacles to remittances, a source of income for the island's inhabitants. Western Union, a company that sends and receives money in cash and bank accounts, suspended its operations to send remittances to Cuba from the United States, due to alleged technical problems.
In addition to this, the Cuban government has decided to increase the price of fuel by 500%, which represents a hard blow to the island's diminished economy.
The lack of access to conventional banking services in Cuba, and economic restrictions have led to growing interest in bitcoin as a viable alternative. The donation seeks to catalyze this interest, providing resources for workshops, seminars and educational programs that will promote the understanding and practical use of bitcoin in everyday life.
