Bitcoiner is a Candidate for Prime Minister of Canada after Trudeau

Justin Trudeau recently announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party ahead of the general election scheduled for later this year, which his party is expected to lose.

"I intend to step down as party leader and as prime minister after the party elects its new leader," Trudeau, 53, said during a press conference in Ottawa. He will thus continue to serve as Canada's prime minister on an interim basis until a successor is named.

Trudeau’s decision has sparked intense speculation about his replacement. Among the possible successors is Pierre Poilievre, the outspoken pro-Bitcoin leader of the opposition Conservatives, who could be Canada’s next prime minister.

In the Canadian political system, the prime minister is not directly elected by voters, but by members of the majority party in parliament, currently the left-leaning Liberals. Among the most mentioned candidates are Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s former finance chief, Mark Carney, a prominent banking boss, and the aforementioned Pierre Poilievre, whose stance on Bitcoin has been widely discussed on the social network X.

Poilievre has captured the attention of the cryptocurrency community by declaring that “people should be free to decide whether or not they want to use bitcoin,” distancing himself from restrictive policies such as those of “communist China.” This approach has generated enthusiasm, with voices such as Ted Paulus suggesting that “if Pierre really wants Canada to stand out, he should make it the most Bitcoin-friendly country on the planet.”

Trudeau’s stance is being criticized by the Bitcoin community, a sentiment shared by renowned Korean-American computer scientist Jimmy Song.

Trudeau, who previously stated that “telling people they can opt out of inflation by investing in cryptocurrencies is not responsible leadership,” was singled out for his anti-Bitcoin approach .

Many now agree that bitcoin is exactly what Canada needs. Especially since the last decade has not been a very good one for the North American country. Rents have risen, wages have stagnated, debt has doubled and money issuance has known no limits.

In fact, the former finance minister and deputy prime minister of Canada was one of Trudeau’s key political allies until she recently resigned from the cabinet. She opposed Trudeau’s proposals to increase spending, accusing him in a letter of “political tricks” instead of focusing on what was best for the country of 40 million people.

That is probably why Bitcoin has gained prominence, with over 10% of Canadians now owning some form of cryptocurrency . And the talk of Bitcoin has made Poilievre popular, who has been warning since 2022 that Canada's money is broken, arguing that fiat currencies have lost their value and stability. In response to this crisis, he proposed that the country establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve. He sees the digital currency as a solution to diversify and protect national reserves.
