Blockchain could help to move energy forward? Here how…

One of the most ambitious leaders target for the next decades is the net-zero carbon reduction that most likely will drive global energy transition for a while. The industries response to the continuous challenges posed by hydrocarbon climate change is a key theme and I believe blockchain technology will play a key role across the energy value stream. As well known to most of readers, starting from 1950s “big data or simply data” have evolved from “recordable” to searchable” to “accessible” and nowadays also “transactional” thank to blockchain technology. We can define blockchain a digital distributed ledger with some desired characteristics: immutable, cryptographically secure, auditable and trustless.  It is applicable to almost the following fields: Politics/governance, Computer science, Cyber security, Energy, Economics, Accounting, Finance with excellent results. It’s a fresh news that “Nori”, a start-up company based in Seattle, will lunch in 2020 his platform to buy certificates (CRC: Carbon Removal Certificate) to prove CO2 sequestration and storage underground, inside trees and elsewhere. Is it one of several projects already announced worldwide with the same aim and same risk of double counting CO2 volumes removed? I don’t judge but it is definitely important to point out a peculiarity: the open platform based on blockchain technology proposed by the company will ensure to pay for a certain quantity of CO2 removed using a specific technology, thus grating at the same time the validation of each certificate issued.  The opportunity to link CO2 removal to a new token is also where interesting from a new market perspective. For those who want to deep dive of this new market challenge I encourage to visit company homepage where you can find more details. More food for your thoughts to come in my blog, stay tuned!
