The cup of (terrible) coffee I'm drinking costs $1.77.

I know it doesn't sound like a lot but A, this is a low-income country and B, it used to be $0.85 two years ago, $1.30 a year ago, $1.50 until last month.

The same cafe I got the coffee from offers a pint of craft IPA for $5.96 - this is nearly as expensive as London, and more expensive than Rome, Nice and Madrid.

There are several reasons for this, most of which are organic, some of which are almost totally beyond our control.

The pandemic, which by the way is the main reason I left home and settled here in the first place, caused a tremendous inflow of fake cash.

Trillions of dollars injected into the economy, which caused prices to nosedive... for about five minutes, and then they skyrocketed.

The second issue, and it is not lost on me that I'm (technically) part of the problem, is that the pandemic made some of us realise we did not need to be anywhere we didn't want to be - and that includes your homeland.

Why pay 50 percent taxes in Norway, Italy or Sweden when you can fcuk off to, say, the UAE and pay zero?

Why stay in a lockdown country when you can just sod off to countries where Covid rules were a bit more, how can I put it, laissez-faire?

The problem is that people with high salaries in low-income countries, and I'm not one of them by the way, I'm still broke.

I was saying the problem is these people flaunt around their 'foreign' stipends and cause prices to shoot up.

I got a friend from Texas I met here. He lives just a 20-minute bike ride down the river.

He doesn't work, 'cause his family has money, and his wife works at a pharmaceutical company (the irony) and makes five figures a month.

It took them about 10 months to understand they needed to stop saying "wow, that is so cheap" at everything, but it was too late.

Problem is, a 20 percent increase on the price of coffee may not matter to them (it matters to me, dammit), but it matters a lot to the locals.

So, in addition to your overpriced coffee, you'll also be hated by them.

This, fortunately, doesn't really happen here because this country is full of magical, wonderful people. But you get my point.

So what to do? No idea. All I know is I saw the price increase on the coffee and figured I might write this to get some of my pennies back.
