"Cost of running AI goes down 10x every year", according to Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said running AI is getting cheaper, not more expensive.

According to Altman, the cost of running different levels of AI goes down ten-fold every 12 months, and so that leads to wider usage.

Altman used OpenAI's GPT-4o as an example.

According to him, GPT-4o (mid 2024) cost 150 times less than GPT, launched just a year earlier in early 2023.

As he explained in a blog post.

The fact that running AI models is expensive is a recurring criticism of AI.

The fact that so many people fear a Terminator Skynet-style end of the world is another.
