I recently read up on one of the writers who is in his twenties about investment strategy and factors he considers before investing in bitcoin. As a more seasoned investor I would like to put my thoughts into this.
Through out he his article he talked about how he was going about it and how you should consider your investments. And I think he is doing the smart move with one point that I had a bit of reservations. He was investing 90% of his assets into crypto while still being in debit. Debit is like a devil itself. As per my suggestion I would like him to change his strategy to pay of that debit while keeping the 40 to 50% maybe in his crypto. Him being young and still having time to go with no children is a major factor for this suggestion. I personally started diversifying my savings from my earning when I was in my early 30s and having being married with a kid. It has paid 100 folds. However I am still glad I had started putting earnings into different asset groups rather then just invest in crypto. Here is what I did and why I did it.
Business:
Either you work or you establish a business, I had the opportunity to establish a business and that I would say was my first investment through family loans. This was paid off fairly quickly and I started earning while unmarried.
Insurance:
After a bit of saving I got married and to secure the future I took out life insurance so that I would be secure and so would my family.
Saving:
At this point in my life my earning had increased quite a bit so I controlled my spending and started saving around 50% of my monthly earnings and putting into saving accounts and term deposits to earn higher yields.
Precious Metals:
Realizing that diversification was important and that savings in saving account and term deposits would not help me achieve long term financial savings I made at the time a heavy investment into gold. Well atleast for me it was a heavy amount at the time. This only paid back 10 years after.
Mutual Funds:
At this point I started moving my savings around 25% of my income to mutual funds and also moved 50 percent of my term certificates into mutual funds. This was one of the best investments I made as it helped me earn enough to cover my day to day expenses while saving what I had back into mutual funds.
Crypto:
This is when I discovered bitcoin and started investing in bitcoin, also wasted around 8 plus btc just to check if this was the real deal, went all out on a grand vacation just to test it. I think that was a stupid move as at that point I had started believing in it and this was majorly waste of my crypto holding. This portfolio is highly diversified now before it was all bitcoin. But now I have some ether and bnb also. However majority holding remains in bitcoin with a few small alts such as cake, bake, auto etc etc....
Invest in Property:
Property is a safe bet and usually pays much higher than any other asset in the long run. My idea to invest here was to achieve financial independence through rental income. In the long run this was as good of an investment as crypto. I had purchased this a property on installments and this has good rental yield helping me now achieve a great life. This was not a home for myself which is my next target and will be going down that road now.
My view point is that you should always diversify and also never bet against bitcoin no matter how much the other investments look good. I have now stopped investing in crypto to be honest. I took out a portion of my bitcoin converted them into stable coins and put them in liquid swaps at pancakeswap and bakeryswap which helps me earn a good amount now. In the coming days I would be taking out substantial amount of funds from my crypto holdings to buy a home. At around 40 I can easily retire right now thanks to mutual funds and crypto (these are what helped me pay for my property that I bought for rental income). By retire also mean I can simply sell my business and buy a few more rental properties and just live of them. This wont be a lavish life but a pretty good one. My aim in the next 5 years to own my own home with atleast 2 more rental properties and then just live it out.
