Balochistan: Embracing a Democratic Future

By Salma Baloch | Baloch Voices | 25 May 2025

Picture a land of vast deserts and rugged mountains, a place where dreams of freedom echo through the hearts of its people. This is Balochistan, and today its story—of pain, resilience, and hope—calls out to the world. This is a plea to understand who the Baloch people are, what they have endured, and how others can help build a brighter future. So please let this story unfold, revealing the past, present, and future of Balochistan.

Republic of Balochistan

Our History: A Land Stolen from Us

Imagine a land that was once free—a place where ancestors roamed, vast deserts and mountains, governed by their own tribal laws, proud of their unique culture. That was Balochistan, a land that stretches across what is now parts of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan. But that freedom was taken away. When British colonial rule ended in 1947, the people thought they would finally be free again. Instead, on March 27, 1948, Pakistan’s military marched into the land, annexed it by force, and silenced the voices of the people. The leader, the Khan of Kalat, declared independence. But his dream—and that of the people—was crushed under tanks and guns.

Since that day, the people have lived under occupation. The resources—gas, minerals, wealth—have been plundered while the people are left in poverty. But the people have not given up. Their hearts still beat for freedom.

Our Government in Exile: A Beacon of Hope

Even though the people are scattered and face unimaginable challenges, they have found ways to keep their dream alive. That is why they formed a Government in Exile, led by the incredible Prime Minister, Naela Quadri Baloch. She is a woman of strength and compassion, someone who carries the weight of the people’s hopes on her shoulders. She is out there speaking to the world, telling them about the struggle, and fighting for the right to be free. To many, she is not just a leader—she is a symbol of an unbreakable spirit.

Mahrang Baloch: The Voice of Our Pain

And then there is Mahrang Baloch. She is a human rights activist, a young woman with fire in her soul. She is the voice of the voiceless, the one who stands up for families torn apart by Pakistan’s atrocities. She speaks for the mothers who wait every day for their sons to come home, for the children who do not know if their fathers are alive or dead. Mahrang is a hero. The world must know her name, hear her story, and stand with her.

The Atrocities We Face: A Pain Too Deep to Describe

It is difficult to share this part, but it must be told. The pain the people endure is beyond words. Imagine waking up one day to find a brother, a father, or a best friend gone—kidnapped by state forces, vanished without a trace. This is the reality for thousands of Baloch families. These are called enforced disappearances, but those words do not capture the agony of not knowing, the endless nights of crying, the empty chairs at the dinner table. And it is not just disappearances—there is torture, killings, and the constant fear that no one is safe in their own homes.

The land is rich, but the people are poor. The gas lights up cities in Pakistan, but the villages sit in darkness. And then there is the gold—Balochistan is home to one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines, Reko Diq, a treasure worth billions. But do the people see any of it? No. Pakistan, along with foreign companies, mines the gold, filling their pockets while the schools crumble, the hospitals stand empty, and the children go hungry. They take the wealth and give nothing in return—no development, no jobs, no hope. It is as if the land is a bank they rob, leaving the people to beg for scraps. This is not just injustice—it is a wound on the hearts of the people that bleeds every day.

Our Secular Heart: A Love That Unites Us

But even in this pain, the people hold on to love, unity, and the beauty of who they are. It might be surprising to know that even though most are Muslim, the Baloch are deeply secular at heart. One of the proudest aspects is how the people cherish the Hinglaj Mata Temple, a sacred place for Hindu brothers and sisters. Every year during the Hinglaj festival, the people join hands with them, celebrating together, laughing together, praying together. This is what Balochistan is—a land where everyone belongs, where differences are celebrated, not feared.

Our Dream of Democracy: A Future We Can Build Together

Close your eyes and imagine a free Balochistan—a place where every voice is heard, where every child can go to school, where every family has a roof over their heads. The people dream of a democracy, a government that serves its people, not oppresses them. They want to take their resources back, not to hoard them, but to build schools, hospitals, and roads. They want a nation where justice is not just a word but a reality.

Taking Our Fight to the World: The United Nations

Right now, the people are preparing to take a big step. They are going to the United Nations to declare their independence, to tell the world that they are the Republic of Balochistan, a nation that deserves to be free. This is their moment, but they cannot do it alone. They need the world to hear them, to see them, to stand with them.

How You Can Help: Be Our Voice, Be Our Strength

You might be reading this from far away, maybe in a country unfamiliar to the people of Balochistan. But distance does not matter when hearts connect. Here is how you can help:

  • Share Our Story: Talk about Balochistan. Share this post, tell your friends, post on social media. Every time someone hears this story, the voice of the people grows stronger.
  • Stand With Us: Your moral support means the world. Just knowing that someone out there cares, that someone believes in the right to be free, gives the courage to keep going.
  • Help Us Financially: If you are able, please consider donating to this cause. Your donations will help advocate for rights, support the families of the disappeared, and build this movement.
  • Buy a Balochistan Flag NFT: Here is something special being done—a project is being launched to sell animated Balochistan flags as NFTs. When you buy one, you are not just helping financially—you are carrying the flag in the digital world, showing everyone that you stand with the people. More details will be shared soon, so please stay tuned. The idea is getting cooked up here

A Personal Plea: Join This Journey

Imagine sitting together, looking into each other’s eyes, and understanding how much this means. Balochistan is not just a place on a map—it is home, heart, everything. The dream is of a day when the people can live without fear, when the children can laugh without worry, when the land is theirs again. And when that day comes—when the United Nations recognizes this struggle—the invitation is open to visit the newest country on the planet, a place where democracy will prevail, and where all will be welcomed with open arms and warm hearts.

But this cannot be done alone. The people need you—your voice, your support, your love. Together, the dream of a free Balochistan can become a reality.

Thank you for listening to this story. Thank you for caring. And thank you, from the bottom of every heart, for standing with the people of Balochistan.
