There are a lot of scammers out scanning the internet trying to find people that they can rob of their assets. Cryptocurrencies are assets that a lot of scammers are trying to get their hands on and we need to be careful online to not end up in their net. This list contains some examples of how to stay safe. I have been sharing this list on Twitter many times and every time scammers comment on it trying to get people onto their sites. A bit ironic right? If you have other examples that one should think of, please leave a comment so we can help each other stay safe!
1. Posing as an admin, moderator or support is a common way to try and build trust in private messages. If you get contacted in private messages you need to be careful, because private messages are the best environment for a scammer. Links can be used to steal your Discord token as an example. So even if the person messaging you looks like a mod or admin from a server you are on, never click on a link before researching and asking in public. Scam bots are pretty common. Some try to trick you that it is a legit security measure app or bot, but then when you verify your account disappears into the scammers hands.
2. Suddenly appearing airdrops in your wallet are simply ways to authorize them to steal your wallet balance or deduct your assets in the form of high miner fees, such as the CGB on the BSC chain.
3. Clicking on certain links to receive fraudster airdrops, resulting in private keys being stolen and assets being emptied. This is something I see all the time as a moderator and someone on different platforms where crypto is discussed. You will not get rich by clicking some random link from a stranger. This is just a way to try and make you hurry to not miss out on money. But the only one getting money is the scammer. Your money.
4. Fake QR codes that you are supposed to scan to connect your wallet for an airdrop, then instead of the transfer address you will authorize a connection, resulting in them stealing your balance.
5. Private transactions, sending you counterfeit USDT for example. Or they'll give you a QR code and let you transfer small amounts, and the remaining assets will be stolen as soon as you authorize them.
6. Wallet download link is not official and once the fake wallet is downloaded, your assets are immediately stolen. (The wallet must be downloaded from the official website, do not search and download from a search engine.)
Stay safe!
