Why Silence Makes You Sharper?

Why Silence Makes You Sharper?

Hello beautiful folks,

Hope you are well!

There's a particular kind of tired that has nothing to do with sleep. You wake up rested, make your coffee, and within 20 minutes you are already reaching out for your phone. Background music, a podcast, something or anything to fill the quiet.

I used to do this without even noticing. Silence felt like wasted space. Like it needed to be filled or it meant something was wrong.

Then my earbuds broke during a week where I had a big project deadline. I could not afford new ones. So I just... sat in the quiet. Worked in it. Walked in it. It was uncomfortable for about 2 days. Then something shifted.

I am not going to pretend silence turned me into some enlightened person. It didn't. But I did notice that my thinking got cleaner. Problems I'd been circling for weeks started to untangle themselves without me forcing anything. Ideas just showed up, uninvited, while I was washing dishes.

There's a reason sensory deprivation tanks are a thing. Your brain has a lot to say when you give it room to speak.

Most of us are running on a kind of low-grade cognitive static all the time. A podcast while commuting, music while cooking, TV playing in the background while you scroll. It feels normal because everyone does it. But normal doesn't mean it's not costing you something.

What it costs you, I think, is the ability to just think. Not productive thinking, not goal-directed problem solving.

I'm not suggesting you sit in silence for hours meditating. I tried that and I mostly just made grocery lists in my head. What I am saying is that there's probably some part of your day you have been filling with noise that doesn't need to be. A commute. A lunch break. The first 20 minutes after you wake up.

Try leaving it empty for a week. Not as a productivity hack. Just to see what comes up.

You might be surprised what your own brain has been trying to tell you.
