Cryptocurrency terms for Beginners. Do you know them all?

When I first started learning about cryptocurrencies not too long ago, I was incredibly confused by some of the terms used online.

The first time I heard the term Fiat the only thing I could think of was the car brand ʕ^ᴥ^ʔ.

If you already know the terms mentioned in the list below then you are most likely a lot more knowledgeable in crypto than me!

 

Airdrop

The distribution of tokens as part of a marketing campaign

Burned

When coins are intentionally destroyed to remove them from circulation

ERC-20

An Ethereum token standard which is used by several coins

FIAT

Cash and digital currencies which are government

Gas

The fees used to execute smart contracts (mainly ETH Gas but there is also a NEO Gas token)

Gwei

Gwei is used to define the gas cost on the ETH platform

Hodl

This stands for 'hold on for dear life'

ICO

This stands for 'Initial Coin Offering' and it is how companies raise funds to make coins

Shilling

Promoting a crypto in order to increase its profit

To the moon/ moonshot

The price is expected to skyrocket. This is often used when predicting the future growth of a particular coin.

Whale

Someone with a large percentage of coin volume. (we are all little fish in comparison to whales)
