What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, (pronounced guy-nuh-koh-MAS-tee-uh), is when the breast tissue in either men or boys becomes enlarged. Typically, it’s caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and estrogen. All men and women have breast glands, however, in men, they are unnoticeable due to their small, undeveloped size.

Who Is A Candidate?

There is no single specific age group of men that are affected. Infants, teenage boys and grown men are all possible candidates. It occurs when there is more estrogen being produced as opposed to testosterone. It can affect either one or both breasts. The condition is common, but psychologically it can be difficult to cope with. What’s important to remember is that it is not a serious condition and treatments are easily obtained.

Symptoms may include enlarged breast tissue and breast sensitivity. If you have continued pain, swelling, tenderness or nipple discharge, then it’s probably time to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Types Of Treatment

In most cases, gynecomastia will resolve on its own, requiring no treatment. But due to hidden factors, treatment may be necessary. That’s why it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to be certain.

Sometimes, the patient may have an adverse reaction to a specific kind of medication that results in suppressing testosterone levels, leading to swollen breasts. If you’re taking a medication long-term, you may want to consider switching to another kind.

Prescription drugs are available that will block estrogen from being administered in your body. There are several types of estrogen blockers that your doctor can prescribe.

In other instances, if your testosterone levels are low, you may need medication to boost your level to a higher amount.

What To Expect

There’s no need to be embarrassed about scheduling your doctor appointment. It’s a simple procedure that will include your doctor assessing your age, symptoms and other external factors. Your doctor will also factor in any medications you’re currently taking and family history.

A physical examination will be the next portion of your visit, during which, your doctor will examine your breast tissue, genitals and abdomen. These tests are important in order to rule out any other risk factors associated with your symptoms.

Bottom Line

Gynecomastia is a common condition that occurs in men and boys of all ages. It isn’t serious, and treatments are available. If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, do not hesitate to contact us today and schedule your consultation.
