Muscles above and below the eyes control our eye movement and also help shape the brows. As we continue to age, our eyebrows begin to sag, but this isn't always due to fat buildup beneath the skin. In many cases, the muscles are reshaping themselves over time, and a sharp brow feature can result. Botox is a muscle-relaxing agent that can help you regain a more youthful set of features.
The active ingredient in Botox is a toxin produced naturally by a specific strain of bacteria. The toxin blocks nerve signals and prevents muscles from fully contracting. Its effect is quite localized, and when a particular muscle is relaxed, other muscles in the nearby vicinity have a more pronounced impact on how the skin surface will look. Think of this treatment as a non-surgical brow lift.
Consulting With The Client
We will never recommend this treatment until we've had a chance to examine your facial features and determine the cause of sagging brows. We can accurately determine muscle strength after watching you make a series of facial expressions. We'll ask you to narrow and widen your eyes, contort your cheeks, and raise and lower your forehead skin.
We can design a customized treatment for each individual based on this type of observation. The actual treatment takes only minutes to perform, and the results can last for up to five months.
Injection Procedure
We use a tiny needle fitted to an ampule or syringe. The toxin is in powder form and is mixed with a saline solution before loading it into the ampule. The needle penetrates through the skin surface and hits the muscle tissue. The dosage is carefully chosen so as not to overly relax other muscles in the vicinity.
You won't notice much of a change for about three days. The Botox fluid settles into the muscle tissue and slowly begins to interrupt nerve signal transmission. The muscle can still relax a bit, but the strength of the contraction is minimized. The skin surface and eyebrow remains smooth, and the other nearby muscles have a stronger influence on the position and posture of the eyebrow.
After several days, you'll notice a smoother, tauter skin surface near the brow. The result is a more youthful, attentive posture to your eyes and brows. Botox can even be used to get rid of fine wrinkles near the eyes because the lessening of muscle contraction means less pulling and pinching of the skin.
Advantages Over Other Treatments
A traditional brow lift is a surgical procedure, and this involves skin ablation. Many of our clients simply aren't ready for such an aggressive treatment. Needling the skin to create a healthier surface layer is not recommended because of the thinness of the skin above the eyes. Botox is a simple cosmetic fix that improves your appearance without actually having to treat the skin directly.
