Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that involves exfoliating the skin with a unique device. While this treatment is most commonly used on the face, it can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the neck and chest. This treatment essentially abrades the skin and makes it smoother. It can be used to treat acne scars, rough skin, fine lines and sun damage.

What Does Dermabrasion Involve?

Dermabrasion is an outpatient procedure that takes place in the comfort of our office in Guilford. Depending on the size of the treatment area and the depth of the scarring, an anesthetic may be used to ensure patient comfort.

Our experienced plastic surgeon works on one area at a time. She uses the device to gently remove the topmost layers of the skin. The skin will be covered with gauze after the procedure to aid in healing.

The recovery period varies depending on the depth of the abrasion and the size of the treatment area, amongst other factors. It takes days for the new skin to completely grow in. While many people experience little to no discomfort, others may benefit from prescription medication after the procedure.

The patient will have to take care of their healing skin. They will have to clean it daily and change the gauze. Since new skin is more sensitive to sun light, they will either have to avoid the sun or wear sunscreen. The patient should periodically check in with our surgical team so that they can monitor their progress.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Candidates for this treatment are in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding what the treatment can accomplish. Good candidates are also nonsmokers. During a consultation at our office, our team can determine if you qualify for dermabrasion treatments.

What is the Difference Between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Both are cosmetic procedures that involve exfoliating the skin. However, microdermabrasion is used mainly to treat discolorations like age spots. In microdermabrasion, another type of device is used that introduces tiny particles to the treatment site. The procedure is gentler and less invasive than dermabrasion, so the patient does not need anesthesia and the recovery time is shorter. Many MedSpas offer both of these treatments as well as other skin renewal treatments like laser scar removal
