The worlds of cryptocurrencies and sport have met once again as former footballer David Beckham (46) revealed he had branched out into the Metaverse. On Wednesday, 23rd of March the former star teased his fans on Instagram uploading a video where he was seen kicking a virtual football and on Thursday, the 24th, Beckham was revealed as a new global ambassador for DigitalBits blockchain.

Confirming the announcement on his Instagram page, Beckham stated: 'Stepping into an exciting new world today!!! Thrilled to start my journey in the metaverse with @digitalbitsorg.'

Later on, he added: 'I am always keen to find new ways to connect with my fans across the world. The moment I spoke with Al and the DigitalBits team, I knew that this was a major opportunity to create new experiences for my fans online. [...] I have always taken pride in working with the best teams and I am so excited to work on my NFT collections and more innovations in the future.'

Through this partnership, Beckham is set to launch a series of NFTs and other digital assets on the DigitalBits blockchain. DigitalBits is a layer-one blockchain protocol that prioritizes security, speed and cost-savings. By providing efficient and cost-effective micropayments, the company aims to facilitate mass adoption of technology and cryptocurrencies in particular.

What is your opinion on this new partnership? Is it just another celebrity trying to capitalize on the NFT craze we're experiencing recently or is it a legit project that might bring wider blockchain adoption and actually produce something useful or productive instead of being an uninspired moneygrab?
