Until recently, the clear and loud voice of the corncrake "der-der" was an inseparable element of the evening landscape of Polish fields, meadows and Polish countryside.

Wyraźny i donośny głos derkacza ,,der-der,, był jeszcze niedawno nieodłącznym elementem wieczornego krajobrazu polskich, pól, łąk i polskiej wsi.

Currently, the corncrake is almost extinct in most Western countries. It can still be found in eastern Europe, where it is quite numerous, and in Poland, where it is less and less.

Obecnie w większości krajów zachodnich derkacz prawie wyginął. Można go jeszcze spotkać na wschodzie Europy, gdzie jest dość liczny oraz w Polsce, gdzie jest go coraz mniej.

For this reason, Crux Crux is on the list of species for which special protection areas are created under the Natura 2000 program.

Z tego też względu Crux Crux znalazł się na liście gatunków, dla których tworzone są obszary specjalnej ochrony w ramach programu Natura 2000.

These birds inhabit all kinds of grassy areas, but not too dense. These birds almost swim in the grass and it must be free from tangled, bulbous grasses. Dense grasses make it very difficult for birds to move, because the corncrake's main way of moving is walking. They fly very sporadically and reluctantly.

Ptaki te zamieszkują wszelkiego rodzaju tereny trawiaste, ale niezbyt gęste. Ptaki te niemalże pływają w trawie i musi być ona pozbawiona splątanych, bulwiastych traw. Gęste trawy mocno utrudniają ptakom przemieszczanie się, gdyż głównym sposobem poruszania się derkacza jest chód. Latają bardzo sporadycznie i niechętnie.

In Poland, the corncrake can be found in the area of the Białowieża Primeval Forest, where it appears at the beginning of May. The males arrive first, and they "blanket" often around the clock in order to attract the female. There can be even several thousand of these sounds per day.

When the Crux Crux reaches its goal, that is, attracts a female that lays eggs, it leaves her, even thousands of kilometers away, flying from Poland to Germany or Russia.

Gdy Crux Crux osiągnie już swój cel, czyli zwabi samicę która złoży jaja, opuszcza ją oddalając się nawet o tysiące kilometrów, lecąc z Polski do Niemiec lub Rosji.

After hatching, the chicks become independent very quickly. Raised only by their mother, they learn to acquire food very early by following her in the grass.

Pisklęta po wykluciu bardzo szybko są samodzielne. Wychowywane tylko przez matkę bardzo wcześnie uczą się zdobywać pokarm podążajac za nią wśród traw.

Corncrake can reach a length of 25 cm and weight up to 200 g. No sexual dimorphism, therefore the female and the male are almost identical. The top of the corncrake is brown with a beige shelled pattern. The bottom is mostly gray. The wings are rusty brown. The sides and belly are rusty whitish brindle. Beak short, strong, orange.

Derkacz może osiągną długość do 25 cm, i wagę do 200 g. Brak dymorfizmu płciowego, dlatego samica i samiec są niemal identyczne. Wierzch ciała derkacz ma brunatny z beżowym łuskowanym wzorem. Dół najczęściej szary. Skrzydła barwy rdzawo-brązowej. Boki oraz brzuch są pręgowane rdzawo-białawe. Dziób ma krótki, mocny, pomarańczowy.
