Electronic musician TrippyB3ats returned with their final EP (to date), Deviations, on August 8th, 2022! This one is comprised of 7 brand new tracks, and I am back to rate them each on a scale of 10, and then give you an overall score for the album.
Without further ado, here is the song by song breakdown for Deviations:
1. Detainee - 6/10
The opening track has an interesting beat and soundscape to it, but it doesn't do enough with it to differentiate itself from the rest. Listen for yourself here!
2. Neopronouns Killed God - 10/10
This one is definitely the standout track from this release! It has a great build up and beat drop. It also has an intensity to it but doesn't overdo it. Listen for yourself here! There is also a pretty cool visualizer for this one!
3. Improv Testimonials - 9/10
Despite sounding a bit like Thomas the Tank Engine doing EDM, it's pretty solid and definitely unique. It also has a pretty great beat drop. Listen for yourself here!
4. Deviations - 6/10
The title track is honestly a bit too much of a chaotic mess to make anything of it. Listen for yourself here!
5. Division Headpat - 7/10
This is a solid song with a catchy trap beat but doesn't set itself apart enough. It could have done more. Listen for yourself here!
6. House Trap - 7/10
Very weird and offputting but in an almost charming way...? It doesn't make any sense at all but I kinda like it. Listen for yourself here!
7. Gathering Sympathy - 8/10
The final track is a bit reminiscent of Last Night of the Parade but doesn't feel so similar to not be unique. It really brings in the best elements of that song and makes them its own. Listen for yourself here!
Overall, I would give this EP a 7.6/10. It doesn't reach the same heights as Reorientation or Hieratic Passe, but it gets pretty damn close. It's definitely elevated by the wonderful Neopronouns Killed God, which is really just hilariously titled. I'm glad to see Trippy is growing in her sound and not just releasing the same thing over and over again. I appreciate that she is able to take risks with her music, even when it means she sometimes releases a few duds on an otherwise fantastic release.
You can check out the full EP on Spotify, YouTube, Tidal, Deezer, and Napster! You can also find it on Web3 platforms such as Audius, Mousai, and even as limited-edition NFTs on OpenSea!
