The Internet, it would seem, has given us the possibility of unlimited search for information and access to alternative points of view. But how often do we use it?
We are in a constant flow of information and, unfortunately, we often believe not in proven facts, but in the most popular information. The phenomenon of “post-truth” has been talked about since the time of Plato, but today this phenomenon is becoming more relevant. This phenomenon arises due to the influence of the media: they create a different reality by manipulating society.
Social media has only reinforced our tendency to close ourselves in a narrow information bubble. Facebook's algorithms, for example, shape our news feed based on preferences and previous actions. Internet activist Eli Paraiser coined a special term for this, a "filter bubble": we just don't see alternative points of view because the service thinks we might not like them. Television also distorts reality, but at least there we can change the channel. We will no longer be able to “switch the channel” on Facebook.
It turns out that our time of “post-truth” is a sign of information glut than starvation. When there is so much information, no one sees the point of double-checking it. For example, the 2002 film “Operation Moon” seriously proves that there was no landing of American astronauts on the moon: it is all a fake of the US government. The CIA simply hired Stanley Kubrick, and he filmed the astronauts in a secret pavilion. The film is built according to the laws of a classic television investigation. Authoritative people in ties and jackets speak before us, newsreel footage flickers, interviews are given, including by Kubrick's widow herself and Henry Kissinger.
And it doesn't matter that their phrases are taken out of context, and some "experts" are outright nonsense. After this film, many really believed that Neil Armstrong and his team were just talented film actors.
One of the main reasons for “post-truth” is the abundance of fake news that the audience is not able to recognize. In addition, they spread instantly, and any attempts to refute the false facts are useless. The emotional takes precedence over the rational. In other words, people believe what they want to believe.
Journalist Robert Fisk from The Independent writes that a person has always been ready to believe not in confirmed facts, but in what corresponds to his beliefs. University of California professor Benjamin Bratton argues that everyone has their own truth, which is based on lived experience. “The point is not that we perceive the world through “post-truth”, but that we express ourselves through it: we share this information, like, comment,” says Bratton. In addition, on the basis of distorted information, decisions are made that may have social and political significance, up to wars and economic crises on a global scale.
What will prevent us from buying into the post-truth?
Fact checking - it is not worth checking the facts for their validity (there is a war, an attack was carried out, there was a conflict) and so on, but for efficiency. Own examination of what has been said will not worsen the perception of information, but will only allow you to delve deeper into the essence of the problem. It's not about taking on the role of a critic. The expertise in question ends in your own head and is limited to only helping you form an attitude rather than coming out as the only correct opinion;
It is necessary to separate social myths from real results. That is, the interpretation in the media must be strictly separated from the true component;
You should not look in the media for confirmation of your beliefs and beliefs. This is the main trick in which a person can be manipulated. You have the right to change opinions, positions and points of view. Change is the only thing that can be permanent.
You can note "how I behave now after receiving the information" and "how I would behave if I did not receive this information." By asking these questions and getting answers to them, it is possible to react in time to how the received flow of information has affected you;
And most importantly, do not expect open lies or failure. Revelations and outright blunders should not be the only factor that makes you think about potential deception. The task of a modern person is much more difficult - to distinguish a real fake from a barely different real one.
And to help us, to develop critical thinking, for the accuracy of the content being checked, the Exorde system was created. Exorde is built around a core platform that provides unbiased credibility scores for information (and virality-related analytics) based on the community, AI modules, and a token-based economy.
This platform is decentralized, open and transparent. This is where contributors will work together to index the entire network, extract its unstructured information, relationships, similarities, trends and any type of pattern in the information circulating throughout the Internet, regardless of platform or media.
Exorde as a knowledge network can use the unstructured content of the Internet and perform a first-of-its-kind analysis of the virality of information circulating throughout the network.
In addition, the Exorde Labs team is proud to announce the launch of the Testnet, which will consist of four stages:
This is just the beginning of the Exorde journey, and even the Testnet journey itself!
Stage 1: Initial observation, where the Exorde Labs team will be the only participant to check that everything works well enough and the system is stable enough. This phase should last ~7 days.
Stage 2: Gradual opening of Testnet for beta testers. The team will release web scraping modules (only compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac for now later this summer) to participate in Testnet. A web dashboard will be provided to monitor network activity, statistics and URLs. This phase should last 1 month.
Stage 3: Consolidation. Testnet should be open to anyone who wants to download open source modules and participate! This phase will include more detailed web panels showing blocks of data being mined on the Exorde network, the number of free and employed workers, protocol details with additional statistics, URLs, and more. End of July, beginning of August.
