Presearch

How to fix broken Presearch extention on Linux

By dragons | Allegory dragons | 10 Jul 2020

Presearch can be great if you want something similar to Brave, that is earning some free alt's while keeping your daily habits and routine.
One can set up Presearch to search through Google which often gives results we actually want. This is a problem for Presearch search engine, and many other search engines simply because Google has so many data nodes about ourselvesthat result in output of information that is in sync with your search history.
You can go to https://presearch.org/account/homepage-providers and rearrange the order of the icons so your favourite search engine be in front as the default search engine. If you want to search through the address bar you can download Presearch extension from https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/presearchorg-search-exten/inpoelmimmiplkcldmdljiboidfkcfbh which will give you that ability.

Fairly easy.. for a Windows machine. On linux, specifically Fedora 32 Workstation the extension is not working, also reported by several users from the reviews page in Google Web Store.
So here is how I managed to search through the address bar with Presearch which uses Google to give results.

1. Go to brave://settings/searchEngines and press 'Add'
2.A window called 'Edit search engine' will pop up with 3 fileds which should be filled like so;
        Search engine: Presearch
        Keyword: :p
        URL: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=98
3. Now we created Presearch as new search engine option which we need to make the default, scroll down a bit and press the three dots⋮ then 'Make default'

4: Save and we are done

The ending string '&provider_id=98' of the URL is what Brave will redirect us through. In this case it's Presearch which uses Google provider to give results. Of course we can go directly to https://presearch.org/ and search like normally using Google icon but searching through the address bar is so much faster.

Here is the URL's for some of the other search engines out there;

Dsearch: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=18490
Presearch: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=1
Bing: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=96
Duck Duck Go: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=97
Google: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=98
Yandex: https://www.presearch.org/extsearch?term=%s&provider_id=100

Now anyone on Linux can use Presearch and earn some PRE, while barely noticing that Presearch even exists. You can bookmark https://presearch.org/ and check your PRE from time to time and also to make sure you are not disconnected which happens after you delete your cookies.

Presearch might grow a lot more but we need to see much bigger dedication from the developers, meanwhile I'm happy to get that free PRE.
