You may regret if you do this in crypto trading ~ leaving open order good till cancel for too long

By Smendel | Allaboutcoins | 11 Aug 2021

Not sure about you, I tend to leave open order in the account and let market decide if the order will be filled or not. One of the benefit is the limited price is the price that I aim to sell the coins for. If the price is met, the order will be filled automatically. I don't need to worry too much about it. The longest time that I left open order in my account is over 2 years(20018 to 2020)! The result, yes, coins were sold at the price that I aimed for couple years ago, however, it missed probably the biggest bull market we saw from 2020 to now.

Unfortunately, I didn't seem to have learned from it. Couple months ago, I purchased small amount of QUICK coin at $640. Unfortunately, market made a turn shortly after I owned this coin. Market crashed and price of QUICK coin dropped significantly with the lowest price around $211 in just few days! I decided to hold onto it like most risk aversion investor. Nearly one month later, one day, I noticed that the price at some points actual went up to over $700 but short lived. Since I didn't track it closely, I missed the boat obviously. I then decided to put up an open sell order with limit price of $715 and then forgot about it again.

Guess what, the price went through roller coaster again today! In less than 20mins, the price shot up to $941.08 the highest and then went back down to $680ish range. When I drafted this email, the price was around $702. As my limit price was hit, the order was filled, the downside is that I completely missed the high today.

This leads me to wonder if it's really a smart move to keep an open order in the account for too long? If yes, is good till cancel right option for it? I hold onto a coin with the goal to sell for a profit, and have no intention to hold it forever. With open orders good till cancel may not guarantee me the maximum profit, it may lock the profit that I am aiming for. This may work esp in crypto market due to high volatility. After all, profit is profit, better than loss. Buy low sell high may sound great, but how many retail investors can actually do that?

I am happy with the money I made with on the QUICK coin today, even though it was not sold at the highest price, it's still a gain. :) Maybe with a little bit closer attention to how market goes and make necessary adjustment to the trading strategy would be a good takeaway? Leaving an open order for over 2 years should definitely not be encouraged!
