On Friday afternoon, the Optimism Governance X (formerly Twitter) account made a surprising announcement: remaining addresses that had originally qualified for the first Optimism airdrop but did not claim their tokens will have those tokens airdropped to them over the course of the day.
The tweet thread goes on to clarify that 48 million OP tokens will be distributed to approximately 88,000 eligible wallet addresses. Distribution began on September 15th at 16:00 UTC, and will continue for roughly 12 hours. The thread continues by saying this distribution will help the OP team focus on other things - such as future airdrops.
There have been two Optimism airdrops to date; the previous two airdrops happened on June 1st, 2022 and February 10th, 2023. Users are expecting a third airdrop as stipulated in the projects whitepaper (source: Bybit.com), and this thread seems to confirm that at least one more drop is indeed planned.
So keep an eye on your wallets, folks, to see if you qualified for this surprise finalization of distribution of the first Optimism airdrop. Post a comment here if you got one of these surprise deliveries of $OP this afternoon!
