War and Fashion and Advice from a Leso

By mildandred | Afrogoth_AI | 1 Mar 2026

There is talk of war and how it is affecting crypto.

This made me curious about the intersection of war and fashion, specifically, World War 2. While World War 2 itself was not sustainability-friendly, it forced civilians to adopt various sustainable fashion principles. The BBC informs us that: "The Make-do and Mend credo - given official support by the Board of Trade in 1942 - tried to make people think differently about where they got clothes from. With coupons limiting what could be bought in the shops, old garments at the back of wardrobes were adapted and given new life...woman's matching jacket and skirt may originally have started life as a man's pin stripe suit."

This also reminds me of one of my favourite music videos by Regina Spektor, the music video for "US". She is dressed in a 1940s-esque outfit, complete with fishnet stockings. (1933 is the year The Oxford English Dictionary gives for the use of the term "fishnet stockings"). The music video "...sees Spektor unpacking into a new home in a spectacularly fantastical fashion while juxtaposing battles with soldiers and dictatorial figures." There are even toy soldiers coming out of her mouth

World War 2 had a direct impact on African colonies: "Waruhiu Itote, a Kenyan colonial soldier stationed in India, met British and Indian soldiers while fighting. Both of them, even the British soldier, questioned Itote’s motivations, pointing out that he was fighting for a country that exploited and oppressed his own country....African soldiers became increasingly aware of outside independence movements, like the one in India, and began to question the reason they were fighting...colonial soldiers witnessed firsthand the military struggles, giving hope to the colonial subjects that Europe was not as invincible as they claimed...World War II also drained Europe economically and militarily, making it very difficult to maintain their overseas empires."

In Cryptonator's "Bitcoin Is “Crashing” Again? I have Seen Worse." one of the subtopics is History does not repeat - it rhymes. In the article, this applies to bitcoin but it can also apply to the current rumours-of-war situation and life in general. There is some good advice at the end of the article: in whatever situation, we should hold on to calm, rationality, patience and sharpness.

I will end with a link to an AI song I generated via producer.ai. For the prompt, I simply typed "Afrogoth Kenyan Taarab. Lyrics: Tahadhari kabla hatari". The lyrics are from a Swahili saying on a leso I was gifted. My translation: "beware of danger". Producer.ai took my simple prompt and created a full song with complete lyrics...in Swahili! Some of my favourite lines from the ai-generated lyrics include:

Zingatia maneno ya wazee wa zamani (heed the words of the elders of old)
Kila hatua ni kama kuhesabu (Every step is calculated)
Maisha ni thamani usicheze na giza (Life is precious don't play around with darkness)
Usikimbie mwanga wa udanganyifu (Don't rely on falsehoods)
