Is our food is becoming less nutritious? Part 1

Our food is becoming less nutritious. It is claimed that the nutrient content in our food is decreasing over the decade. A study in 2004 claimed that nutrient value has decreased in our food as protein fall by 6% vit. C by 15% vit. B2 by 38%. Apart from them, iron and calcium content in our food has also fallen.

But there is debate about the numbers as measuring nutrients in 1950 which we use as standard could have possible errors.

So, what caused nutrient depletion?

Let's look into all possible reasons and then filter out the actual reason.

1) Depletion of soil:- A potential reason could be the depletion of soil for this phenomenon but as we know that as science advanced we created the fertilizers and modern techniques to nourish our crops and we use these techniques in our farming so this reason is ruled out.

2) Selective breeding:- Selective breeding could be the reason for the depletion of the nutrients in our food. We breed the plants for higher yield and pest resistance during this process the nutrient content could have gone down. But scientists conducted an experiment to rule out this point.

Golden Rod Experiment:- Golden Rod is a weed. and weeds are not breeded in our history as they were not edible for human beings hence left untouched. Golden Rod is a weed that is food for bees. So a sample of Golden Rod from 1842 was tested against the today,s golden breed and it was found that the protein content in golden rod is 30% less than the one from the 1842 sample. So even the plants are not breeded still the nutrient content is going down.

So why does it going down.

Could it be CO2 that is making our food less nutritious?
