"It seems that Twitter has faced a large-scale cyber attack. This is evidenced by a number of posts in which users are asked to send bitcoins under a false pretext. Among the targeted accounts: Apple, Uber, Jeff Bezos, Barack Obama, and even the democratic presidential candidate."
According to Hawley, what happened is not just a "coordinated series of hacking incidents", but "a threat to Twitter as such."
"As you know, millions of users rely on your service not just to publish public messages, but also to communicate privately, directly. A successful attack on your system's servers poses a threat to your users ' privacy and data security."
The Senator asked Dorsey to answer a number of questions about the incident:
— What measures does Twitter take to prevent system-level hacking that threatens the entire user base?
— Were accounts protected by two-factor authentication attacked; if so, how was this possible?
— How many users may have experienced data theft due to hacking?
— Did this attack pose a security threat to the President's Twitter account?
The FBI also responded to the hack, calling on the public to be vigilant and not send cryptocurrency to the addresses of scammers.
