Today, I will take a break from posting about crypto. It's been awhile since I've posted something about geopolitics and with today's post I want to cover a very interesting topic. I know the post will be published very late, but I do hope that you, my friends, have the time to take a look. What led me to cover this is some interesting readings that I came across in the last couple of days: it's all about Private Military Companies and, especially, about the Wagner Group.

What is the Wagner Group?
Basically, this is a private military company from the Russian Federation and is made of mercenaries. This PMC is heavily used by Putin to solve its problems, in a very specific "Russian" way.
In recent years, we've seen that governments try to avoid getting directly involved in a conflict. This phenomenon grew in intensity in the last couple of years, especially in the Middle East. States involved there preferred to avoid fighting directly. Instead, they chose to hire different groups of army-men or full private armies made of mercenaries. The first PMC that has been created was the British WatchGuard, founded in 1965 in the United Kingdom. Another too well-known PMC is the American BlackWater, which has been found guilty of killing 20 Iraqi civilians on the 16th of September 2007. But the most famous one is the Wagner Group, a Russian company. The last 10 years represented a huge expansion of the operating area of the WagnerGroup, making its presence felt in dozens of conflicts. The Russian President is using this PMC to support his allies in Syria, Libya and other African countries. Its involvement is seen even in Venezuela. The most important objective is to enlarge its sphere of influence.
Looking at how conflicts evolved throughout the years, we cannot say anymore that a war is like many others from the past. The nature of wars and conflicts tremendously changed and brought new forms of confrontations. The newest term is "hybrid war". On top of this, wars are not fought by states, but by private companies. States do not pay for their own security. Instead they hire private companies to implement defensive measures in order to protect the state. An entire market has been created, and PMCs play a huge role. Many developed and developing countries are using PMCs, because for some of them is much cheaper. The result is that as long as states make use of the private military sector more often than before, PMCs became important players in conflicts and key players in security and defense policies.
The US have the biggest PMCs, but in the last years the Russian Federation build an entire infrastructure of PMCs. The Russian PMCs in the Middle East and Northern Africa attracted the attention of the international community. As I was already saying, the most famous one is the WagnerGroup. Basically, it's a private military company, so the state has nothing to do with it. It is heavily involved in Syria and Libya, where cruel civil wars take place.
If you find this subject interesting, I'm more than glad to debate any issue with you.
