The Weeknd and Ariana Grande

The UK Top 20 (10 March 2023)

It's March the 10th. This used to be my favourite time of the year but, at zero degrees Celsius and with various other stuff going on, I am struggling to enjoy current days. I want to be writing online to earn some pennies because…… er... I'm not quite sure. Interesting. So, without further ado, let's listen to the the pop charts. Here we go...

Jordan North sits in for someone. He sounds like the other guy. Who is number 1? Well, Stormzy is at number 21 with 'Hide and Seek'. This is just nice. It feels watered down but it is very chill music and it hangs around in the chart keeping us sane. Gosh; the annoying DJ jumps in. Power to the people apparently. Very demotic promotion, coming from the streets, has discovered some indie band in Wigan.

Mae Stephens - a new name to me. It's the same stylish pop. Do I like it? Not so far. Cian Ducrot does the male Celtic voice, chords on the piano track. Boring. Does George Ezra fall into the same bracket? I'm not very good with accents. George's voice is unique at least and he's enjoyed a second massive seller with this popular cheery number 'Green Green Grass'. Mimi Webb does some cover of Taylor Swift and now we'll have Red Flags. This is pop and it's alright. Heavy with the drums and a few nice sounds in there. Songwriting pretty lame perhaps.

Oh this is lovely sampling of some old track - what is it? Nice hip hop track. 'Us Against The World' by Strandz. It is very old skool. Straight nineties beats. Number 12 already. There isn't a lot of movement in this week's official chart. Things up or down one place. '10:35' by Tiesto and Tate McRae is growing on me. Miley's been at the top for 7 weeks and she'll make it eight I expect although Ariana Grande is around...

I have a break and get a few things done. Pop music. I'm getting the hang of the charts. I'm beginning to understand where some of these songs are mainstream and where they veer a bit and try to do something differently. To frame it all as pop music is sort of odd when there is a mix of genres mixing together here. I'm not hugely musical myself though I have many years of experience studying music. Most of it feels sort of generic like you've heard it before. And it's probably quite typical of me to like something one week and not the next ('Ceilings' by Liz McAlpine) or vice versa which is to do with mood.

The Radio 1 chart show that broadcasts in the UK on Friday evening is also a crazy format to listen to when you often get quite a drastic slice of a single rather than the whole radio edit and this is interspersed with people (DJ and adverts) shouting. Some stuff feels really cheesey, very poppy, like 'Calm Down' by Rema and whatsshecalled (Selina Gomez)... but the hooks make it quite likeable. This is a pretty nice song that doesn't really annoy - it has a proper lullaby feel however - so that's how this sort of pop hook works. Then they play the extra lengthy strings in the soundbed beneath the DJ. And somehow the fun, best music does seem to rise to the top of the charts (in my opinion).

And I like pop music. SZA's 'Kill Bill' is still very, very nice. Clever. And sad. Oh so Ariana Grande is singing with The Weeknd. Not heard this record. Surprised it didn't chart higher. I wonder if it will grow on me this one. It has some nice sounds; nothing hugely original, sounds harking back to former Weeknd records. I can't imagine the hook or chorus grabbing me after this first listen but it probably will. There's hardly any change in the charts this week which seems strange. Libianca climbed 3 from position 11 to position 8 (I'm not much of a fan. I'm not very keen on 'Boys A Liar' either which is still at 2.) Anyway that Libianca track is the only song in the top 10 this week to move either up or down more than one place. Miley makes it eight weeks at the top.

'Flowers', the Miley Cyrus record at number one, is on the Columbia label it says here, as is 'As It Was' by Harry Styles which held the top spot for much of last year and remains in the top 10 this week. Columbia is owned by Sony. 'Flowers' is a kinda' nice record - Miley's country tinge adding to that seventies disco feel, which I've written about before. It has a real beat. They cut it off too fast. Something will bounce in sometime to knock it off the top. That's the pop music charts in the UK this week.
