Have Your ETH Transaction Pending? Learn How To Cancel It With This Simple Guide

By xqanxxx | xqanxxx | 19 May 2020

Just a few days ago, I tried to swap ERC20-AWC to BEP20-AWC but due to the high Ethereum transaction fees, I had to customize in order to reduce the gas cost. Eventually, the transaction got stacked. No miner was willing to confirm my transaction due to the low gas fees I used.

You might have had a similar experience where your ETH transaction has been pending for days and wondering how to go about it. In this guide, we are going to look at how we can cancel pending transactions on Ethereum Network.

Thing You Will Need

  • An Ethereum Wallet that supports editing of Nonce value (MetaMask, Trust Wallet,
  • ETH to cover gas fees
  • Nonce of your pending transaction which can easily be found by expanding your transaction details on https://etherscan.io/

Basically our aim is to send a transaction of 0 ETH to our address with the same nonce as the stacked transaction. This will drop and replace the stacked transaction with the new transaction we are going to execute.

Step 1

With your transaction Hash, access your transaction details on etherscan.io. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Click to see More" hyperlink as shown below:

Locate the nonce of your stacked transaction as indicated in fig.1.0 above. A nonce is a number assigned to an Ethereum transaction to help address the issue of double-spending. Every ETH transaction has a nonce attached to it, specifying the order of transactions.

In reference to fig 1.0, the nonce of the pending transaction is 15 as emphasized with a "red" rectangular shape. So what we are going to do now is to send 0 ETH to ourselves with 15 as the nonce. We will be using Trust Wallet for this demonstration.

Step 2

Open Trust Wallet and choose "Ethereum" from the list of assets. Click on the "Send" icon and enter your address as the recipient address, and 0 as ETH amount. In our case, we will use "0xfbaabbe9aecebff17b0da14bc5d0d283ed99c79f" as our recipient address.

On the next page go to settings to modify the nonce. You can also do the same for Gas Price and Gas Limit.

NB: You should ensure the second transaction (rescue transaction) has a higher gas price than the previous (stacked transaction). You can see, I used a fee of around $0.07 in the stacked transaction and approximately $0.10 in the new transaction which can be seen below:

Step 3

Manually input 15 as the nonce and modify the Gas Price if you think it is low. You can use the Ethereum Gas Tracker tool by etherscan.io to check for appropriate gas fees and tweak accordingly.

Step 4

The final step is to send the transaction and wait for confirmation. Once it's successful the status of the stacked transaction will be changed to "Dropped & Replaced".
