The Carpathian climate supposedly is not warm enough for fig trees to grow, multiply and be fruitful, yet, that didn't stop my old fig tree from growing beside my house. I've never particularly liked figs, but I do appreciate and cherish sources of health nature has to offer. My curiosity and logic persuaded me to undertake research. There has to be a solid reason for fig trees to be mentioned in the Bible, and praised by Romans, right? Well, I made a few interesting discoveries, that I want to share with you! However, let me remind you that most information available to civilians are fishy. Books are no exception! Therefore, I strongly encourage additional research, if you're interested in discovering true gifts and benefits figs have to offer.
"A land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything" Deuteronomy 8:8-10
That is the Biblical description of a promised land! In another verse, we read:
"During Solomon’s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, everyone under their own vine and under their own fig tree." 1 Kings 4:25
There are many Biblical verses that include figs and fig trees which are used as a metaphor for abundance and prosperity. In Mark 11:13, Jesus cursed an unfruitful fig tree, which could serve as a great lesson to literalist Christians who sit and wait for God to do their work! Having potential, skills, knowledge, and an opportunity but refusing to use those gifts is unbiblical!
"Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he (Jesus Christ) went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he (Jesus Christ) found nothing but leaves. Then he (Jesus Christ) said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it." Mark 11:13-14
THE FRUIT OF THE ANCIENTS
The Ficus Ruminalis was the name of an ancient fig tree that had a religious and mythological significance in the ancient city of Rome. It grew on a Palatine Hill which is one of seven hills of Rome, and one of the oldest parts of town.
In my opinion, all historical sources about this particular tree seem to be fabricated, and the result of otherworldly imagination, except, perhaps the works of Augustan historian Livy.
Allegedly, in ancient Rome, figs symbolized an emblem, of the prosperity of the race. There were four sacred fig trees in Rome, all together. You can read more about them in the work of miss Jane DeRose Evans, called "The Sacred Figs in Rome".
Figs were also praised by ancient Egyptians and Persians! Religions that praise fig trees are Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Allegedly, for Buddhists, the most important plant is the fig tree beneath which Buddha attained enlightenment.
All of my researches so far, regarding the nutritional value of figs ended up with disappointments. Honestly, I am not sure if Romans, Egyptians, and Persians foolishly ended up praising invaluable fruits, or they knew something we are missing. For now, we should keep in mind the possibility of having an obvious elephant in the room that we don't see. Surely, Dr. @Mictorrani could teach us a lesson or two about the health benefits and nutritional value of figs, but let me scratch the surface!
With only 70 calories per 100 grams of figs on average, they don't belong to the group of high-energy fruits, which means people can eat them without gaining much weight, however, 93% of figs' calories are carbohydrates (sugars), therefore, prolonged and excessive consumption of figs may cause insulin resistance, which guarantees gigantic health issues, such as diabetes type 2, fatty liver, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems (including heart attacks), Alzheimer's disease and even cancer, 'cause the only food of cancerogenic cells is SUGAR (including all types, without exception).
Figs are NOT rich in trace minerals. In fact, a hundred grams of figs contain only 3% of the daily intake value of potassium, 0% of sodium, and only 1% of zinc.
Out of all vitamins, figs may offer only vitamin C and vitamin K in miserable amounts. 1% of the daily intake value for vitamin C, and 3% for vitamin K.
It seems like a single egg may offer more proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals than a kilogram of (allegedly healthy) figs. I do not recommend figs to anyone who is trying to lose weight, restore health and develop a more muscular body.
