Having AI write a story, A Guy named Frank

Thought I'd give AI a chance to write a story by itself without my intervention or guidance for a little while. Here's what it did.

This is a story about a guy named Frank. I'm really sorry if you're not a fan of this guy. For those of you who like him, thanks again and enjoy this story.

This is a short story and took me long enough to write it. The last thing I do before I hit the publish button is to make sure it is fully edited and follows all writing conventions and is grammatically correct.

I hope you will enjoy it.

You are Frank

You are 36, not super old but old enough to have had your fair share of life. You are not dumb, but smart enough to be able to hold conversations with people smarter than you. You are married to a great girl and you like the kids. You like the family you've created and everything you've done. Life is good.

One morning, about this time of year, you wake up and decide to walk the dog before breakfast. The reason is never made clear. It could have been to have some alone time to talk to her, maybe where the dog never comes home, maybe she fell down the stairs and broke her neck. You walk the dog, you go back to bed and you wake up at around 7 o'clock, scratch your head to think what your next move might be.

You walk to the kitchen and buy a coffee. You look outside out the window and decide to sit outside for a bit. You sit down at a table and look around. You decide to walk to your daughter's room, open the door and greet her before going to the kitchen. When you get there you see your girl looking at a screen with a man standing at the back of a room. You ask her what that man is doing in your house. She tells you that this is a guy named Frank and he works for a company she's been doing online school work with. He's been helping her.

You go back inside and sit on the couch. You tell her it's nice to meet her. She's pretty and you've never seen this guy around before.

You say your goodbyes and walk out the door.

You walk outside and sit on some steps. You put your hat on. You take a deep breath and go to look at the guy again.

But you're afraid to see Frank and you walk back inside and sit on some steps and drink some coffee and watch some television..

You remember feeling good that morning and thought about getting your coffee.

You finish your cup of coffee and decide to go for a walk. You walk for about an hour and then you decide to go into that big bookstore, the one that totally has that book you've been meaning to read for the last 50 years.

You walk in, look around for this book you want, but you can't find it. You find copy paper and shoes and kids books, but no book. You walk up to the counter and ask the person where can I find this book. They tell you "Sorry, but we're out of stock." They hand you a catalog and tell you to wait till it comes in.

You tell them thank you and walk out of the shop. You were mad at this point and decided to go for a drink.

You walk to the local bar and ask for a beer. You see your old buddy and you walk up and tell him it's been a while. He tells you yeah, yeah, yeah, it's been. You ask him how's his family. He tells you they're good, great. You ask him what he thinks about life. He gives a detailed answer about how life is great and all the great things he's been doing. You ask him if he's going to be around town soon. He tells you sure, you should come over for a BBQ, the kids will be happy to see you. He asks if you want to go for a walk. He suggests you go to the beach. You are confused at this point.

You look around and see a guy walking towards you. It's this guy who was walking around the bookstore at the beginning, you know the man who was helping them with their school work. You ask him if he's that guy you helped before. He says sure, that's me. He says he remembered helping your girl out with this guy who came in to buy a copy of this book. He tells you why he looks familiar. He tells you he saw you outside. He was also the guy who was at the bar.

You tell the guy you have to go. You have to buy something. You have something to do. You have to do dishes. You have to do things. You have to meet your wife. You have to pick up your daughter. You have to pick up your wife.

He asks if you're doing everything. He asks if you have to do that thing you have to do too. You are confused. You ask him what he means by that. He tells you that he runs an online magazine for this company. He asks you to shoot him an email with your names because he joins photographer's business cards up online. He tells you to do the same the other guy did the other day. He has gotten offers to do important things, important photos, important stories. He tells you to use the company links he gave you, to see his work. That's if you have time. He tells you have to go. He tells you you have to do other stuff. He tells you to email him or just shoot him a message later. You nod and walk out.

You walk back around to where you see him. You ask him to join you for a drink. He tells you sure, sure, sure.

They force you to take a drink. You can't remember how much it is, but you find out you drink too much. They tell you to relax. This is just another drink.

They tell you you're looking pretty good. You tell them you wish your nose wasn't so red, you'd like it better like this guy's.

They let you manage your own drinks. They tell you don't do anything stupid. They tell you to make it back to your car. They tell you to make sure the car is locked. They tell you to come back to them at your motel room.

You wonder if the guy only works for them until they let him go to work for another magazine. They tell you to take another drink. They tell you to relax.

Your daughter comes to you. She hugs you. You help her up the steps. You hold her for a long time. She's tired. She pulls away. She pulls out her matress. She sleeps for a while.

You know it's late. You say your goodbyes to everyone. You go back home. You see Frank again.

You ask him what that is with all the kids stuff. You say they're making sure I make it home. He tells you the kids are probably with their mother. He tells you to sit down. He tells you to relax. He tells you to make yourself at home. He tells you to make yourself comfortable. He tells you its probably time for you to go now. You say thanks. He tells you no problem man. You look at your watch. You stop at a gas station. You ask the guy there what time it is. He tells you it's a little past three. You look at your watch again. You look at the guy. You ask him if he's sure. You ask him does he see your clock or just some watch, sure, I just wanted to see if you're sure. He tells you it's not even three yet. You ask him if you can get your watch fixed. You ask him if he can fix your watch.

He tells you he will.

He asks you if you're sure it's broken. You tell him you're sure.

We have to go back to the hospital. The doctor comes out. He tells you all is well. They can't figure out why your girl is so tired. She might have a heart condition. She might have some other condition. They put her on some other medicine. They tell you don't worry about it. She should be ok.

You go to bed at seven. You wake up at nine. You make your girl some cereal. She says it tastes good. She asks you what's wrong. You tell her what's wrong. You tell her to hide. You tell her she's tired and don't drink that much, drink more water. She says she is, she's thirsty. She says you're right, she should drink more water, she will.

You're up at three in the afternoon. You make your girl some cereal and make her a sandwich. You read her a story and make her a sandwich and some juice. You make her laugh. She makes you laugh. She says you make her laugh more than anyone else.

You put her on the bed and let her drink her juice. She's smiling and happy. She smiles at you. She says it's nice here, don't you think? You tell her sure, sure it's nice. She says thank you. She says she's happy. She says she's glad she came out here. She says I'm glad I came out here. She says we should do this more often, we should stay here and read and play and take pictures and do other things. You tell her sure, we should. You say we should do other things. You're in your car.

There's a guy standing there. He asks you for a picture. You tell him sure, sure, sure. He tells you they need to get a picture of your girl smiling. And he wants a picture of him smiling.

The guy asks you if it's ok for this guy to put his arm around your girl. You tell him it's ok. He says sure. The guy tells you the guys name is Frank. He tells you his name is Frank too. You go to the hospital. You're alone. There's a man sitting there. He has a name badge and a camera. He's looking at your phone and your wallet. He's taking pictures of your phone and your wallet and other stuff. You ask him if he's here to take pictures of your girl. He tells you not to bother him. He tells you not to bother him. And that was when I intervened and said to myself, Good for a bit but then as time went on, the story exponentially devolved. But we're still in the early stages of everything so maybe 5, 7 years from now, the situation will be much different and AI will start writing stories that are pretty good, ok even without any human intervention. I'd give it 10 years being very optimistic where various forms of AI are frequently writing popular books/stories that top the charts.

Does that mean human writers should give up? Not in the slightest! Your own form, voice, opinion, thoughts, can all be magnified by collaboration with new tools.
