A Therapist in Your Backpack - How to Journal Yourself Into Freedom From Lust

I started journaling eight years ago.

At first, I didn't expect the practice of writing down my thoughts to bring me so many benefits. Writing allowed me to understand my emotions, develop creative solutions to my problems, and heal from deep hurts in my heart.

I discovered that if you ask yourself the right questions, you can also overcome pornography addiction. Journal can become your therapist guiding you towards freedom and healing.

Here's how it works.

Journaling Is How You See the Invisible Part of Who You Are

A journal is a mirror of your inner self.

You can't see your thoughts in the physical unless you have a microscope strong enough to see neurons. Journal gives and you can write your thoughts down. When you write your thoughts down, you have a physical representation of your inner reality.

Writing your emotions and experiences is how you visualize your emotional level.

Journaling Allows You To Look At Yourself Objectively

Written thoughts give you an objective point of view of yourself.

Journaling helps you to objectively see your own life experiences, thoughts and emotions. Written words don't carry the emotional load as do feelings. You can objectively look at your emotions to make a better decision or give yourself wiser advice.

Journaling is how you step out of the stormy cloud of your emotions and gain a greater judgment of the situation you're in.

The Power of Answering the Right Questions

We know way more subconsciously than on the surface.

we bring forth a deep knowledge by asking questions. Journaling allows you to slow down and reflect on the deeper realities of your heart. It is the best way to unravel confusion and make sense of why you feel a certain way. Uncovering deeper realities allows you to see and find a lot of wisdom and answers.

You know how to move forward.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

  1. What are your short and long-term goals for recovery from lust? How will you achieve them?

Write down your recovery plan. Avoid making a plan from a third-person point of view. Start by, "I will…"

  2. What need do you hope to fulfill by watching porn?

If you want to overcome lust, pornography is not your main enemy. The problem is much deeper. If you start reflecting on your heart, you will find a deeper desire that you are trying to fulfill by opening explicit websites. There could be a fear you are running away from, insecurity you are hiding from, or a deep desire for intimacy that you believe you don't have the right to achieve.

  3. When do you feel the happiest and most fulfilled?
Answering this question will reveal what you want in life and what fulfills you. I'm sure it's not looking at naked people. Journaling these answers is how you recognize your deepest desires. As you journal the answer, ask yourself how can you achieve those things, and what small steps daily to move forward in achieving fulfillment.

  4. How would your life look like if you no longer had the struggle with lust?
Answering this question will strengthen the desire to overcome. When you know why you want to be free and what draws you, temptations will lose their taste. They will become dull and undesirable.

Last Thoughts

We have a therapist in our backpack, but most of the time we don't know how to use it. Journaling your thoughts allows you to do deep self-reflection, see yourself from an objective point of view and give yourself advice.

You know way more than you think.
