It’s no secret that our traditional education system has been flawed for a long time. Whether it’s in a public or private school, in most cases, students are only taught how to memorize and regurgitate facts, with only a few exceptions for creative writing and the arts. But what about the real life skills that students need to be successful?

There are several things that schools don’t teach you, but should. Basic finance, for example, is something that should be mandatory for all students to learn. Understanding the basics of credit, debt, and investing can save young people a lot of money and heartache in the future.

Another important subject that is often missing is the ability to think critically. Schools don’t teach students how to assess different viewpoints and come up with their own opinion. In today’s world, being able to think critically can be an invaluable asset.

Time management is also an important skill that isn’t taught in school. Juggling a job, family, and an education is not easy and having the skills to prioritize tasks and stay organized can be a real time-saver.

Finally, schools don’t teach people how to be leaders. While some schools may offer leadership courses, it’s still not a mandatory requirement for graduation. Not everyone is born a leader, but having the skills to delegate tasks and inspire others is essential for success.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy fix for this issue. Most schools are locked in a never-ending battle to compete with test scores and academic performance. However, it’s highly recommended that all students take the initiative to learn these skills outside of school. With the right guidance, and a little bit of effort, students can become well-rounded individuals with the skills they need to be successful in life.
