Is Fast Heart Mart the last American songwriter?  No.  Is he one of the last American songwriters?  I hope not.

The answer to the question posed in the comment section of the documentary below, "why isn't Fast Heart Mart famous" is that a culture of "art communities" doesn't actually enable an artist to achieve household-name independence, which is necessary in order to make an independent living.  They keep artists dependent, and down.  Fast Heart Mart naturally thrives among the types of people who populate those constrictive social constructs better than some, which is fine, but they'll never let him go.

It is my sincere hope that he realizes it before they drag him down with them.  He may stay in San Diego until it falls into the sea, if that is where his purpose is, and that's alright. Being where your purpose is is more valuable than almost anything.  But may he realize he is living among boa constrictors, who suffocate him with the peanuts and smiles they toss into his jar as a smug, patronizing afterthought.  They see him as an indentured servant, essentially.  He is there for THEM, but they are not there for HIM.  It doesn't matter if they're aware of it or not.  Being an unwitting tool of oppression isn't a virtue.  It's stupid.

If they really had his back, they'd send him to the stars.  But they hate free, independent people.  I hope he keeps his free-thinking, gregarious attitude intact, but realizes the folly of believing in the beneficent nature of people who keep him in a cage.  God is not a misanthrope, but just because people are smiling, smoking weed, and profess good intentions with a California vibe doesn't mean their minds are truly free and open, or that they're any good.  Cokeheads think they're happy, but that doesn't mean it's actually true.  It isn't as dissimilar as it sounds.
