My friends David & Shelly need to get back to the U.S. for medical reasons. I met them last year in San Miguel de Allende, where they helped me to escape a weird situation in which my landlord had sicced all kinds of dubious government entities on me. The situation became unstable, and they helped me get out of there within a few hours of the weird people banging on the gate and telling me I have a government appointment at 11pm, and sliding fake subpoenas through the crack in the gate (for nothing, of course). I ignored the paperwork and got out of there. David & Shelly helped me pack. I can't help them at this time, and am only ever a few days away from homelessness myself. But if you can, I know they would be grateful. This is their situation:
Seda, our kitten, Shelly Marie and I are working to get securely, quickly and inexpensively into the US to Lafayette to see a cardiac surgeon with whom we have a family connection. We are not well. I’ve been analyzing and tracking cardiac symptoms for months and can no longer delay treatment with my current understanding. The medical technology, expertise and specialization we require is yet unavailable in Mexico. I would classify our medical conditions as serious to critical.
I will be able to rapidly acquire the required medical insurance through employment in the United States. I cannot do that here quickly enough.
While we still possess valuable assets we intended to sell to fund our search for a new home, our inability to communicate, our ignorance of the required systems to market items, the market’s inability to afford luxury items and our illnesses have almost stalled our efforts and taught us to sleep in our car comfortably while cooking delicious rice, beans and eggs on a campfire.
We purchased a $10,000 car when we arrived in Puerto Vallarta to achieve multiple purposes. The intent was an exploration vehicle, easily repairable, fuel efficient, reliable, popular, re-sellable and anonymous. While the 2018 Nissan Versa met and exceeded every requirement, a lack of understanding of business processes and risk remediation have blocked access to this now critical asset. The lawyer who sold us the car is refusing to send us the required paperwork to sell it. The options for rectifying business problems of this type in this country get very interesting very quickly and often do not involve the police. This is a business we had rather avoid. While the car is worth $8500, the investment in collecting that seems temporarily upside down. I believe I have found a way to monetize the asset safely and legally without further risk. This methodology will require validation with a notary.
Shelly Marie and I left roughly $25,000 of personal possessions to be coordinated and sold by a close friend post departure. Within one week all of those items and two motorcycles were stolen from the property. We were counting on that money to fund our search for a new home. One of the motorcycles, a 2005 BMW R 1200 GS with only 6000 miles, was recovered a week ago. As a function of that recovery we now have a very good idea who stole our possessions. We intend to coordinate that recovery upon our arrival and stabilization in the United States.
I also possess clear title to a 20 acre parcel of land in Front Royal Virginia worth at least $150,000 US. Understanding that land is not necessarily a rapidly liquid asset, I believe there are emergency monetization options available against that asset until it sells.
We have learned through the generosity of our friends and the kindness of strangers when we lift a foot there is always a stair. This was a big part of our journey. Follow me. What do I wear? What do I eat? Can this be done in this world? We now know it can. We would not have learned this if we had not encountered the difficulties born from the seemingly unfortunate previously described events. Were they unfortunate or are they now savings accounts rapidly becoming available following the lesson?
I felt it necessary to describe our current financial situation. We are not dumb or destitute. We are in a spot. Have you ever made a series of decisions based on a set of assumptions that put you in a place you didn’t intend to be? That’s where we find ourselves. “You can get there from here. I wouldn’t start there.“
