How to Excel in Your Job or Career

By MicaR | Online Venture | 5 May 2024

The best way to excel in your job is to impress your boss. How can you impress your boss? By buttering him, spying on other staff for him, doing his personal chores (taking his kids to the football match for instance), etc. Am I joking? Well, not. If you have ever worked in a company, you will understand the only way to excel in your workplace is by doing things that please your boss. I will share my personal experience. I along with the other 5 staff were laid off during the covid lockdowns. A couple of months later, everyone was called to remote working, except me. These guys did everything to please the boss, even if it means to blow balloons for the boss's kid's birthday party.

On a serious note, in order to perform better in your workplace, you need to be very skilled, having additional skills will always help you. For example, if you are a copywriter, having graphic designing skills will help you become more competitive as copywriting and graphic designing are closely linked. You also need to work hard, deliver on time, and deliver the best work. You should never get involved with workplace scandals.

How Education and Learning Skills Help in Your Career Development

First of all, you need to understand what exactly is education. Education does not only mean gathering certificates, education means gaining knowledge learning skills, and building expertise. Well, if you drive a truck, or work as an electrician, plumber, or mason you are basically doing blue color jobs, you are tiring your ass to earn a small amount. If you graduate in microbiology, you can work in a food company and receive a fat salary. Do you know how much is the average salary of a microbiologist in the US? Well, microbiologists earn $71690 per year in the US. Now compare this average salary with the average income of a truck driver in the US. The entry-level salary of a truck driver is just about $45,000, whereas experienced drivers earn as much as $60,000 per year. Now, tell me who earned better, an educated man or a skilled man? I don't mean to say you don't need skills, what I am trying to say is your chances of earning become better if you are educated and have a degree.

If you have professional skills, apply for a high-paying job. If getting a job is not possible or you do not want to work in any company, try freelancing. If you want to become a freelancer, there are numerous options but starting with the popular choices like Udemy or Fiverr will reward you better. There are a lot of less popular platforms, which are also less competitive and which also have lower frees. However, on a new platform, it is hard to earn even $10. Even when you give just 1 percent commission, your earnings will still be very small.

Learn Profitable Skills

These days people are focused more on learning something that will yield profits immediately. For example, on learning platforms, you can learn to code in 6 weeks. On the 7th week, you are ready to work on paid assignments.

If you want to build your career, you need to develop skills in the niches that are in high demand. I truly believe that skills like Machine Learning, Mobile Development, Data Visualization, Data Engineering, UI/UX Design, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain are high-paying skills. In fact, I do mobile development and I get high-paying jobs on Udemy.  If you do not have skills in these areas, you can join learning sites like

Coursera, edX, Khan Academy, Alison, Udemy, Skillshare, Masterclass, Stanford Online, Codecademy, etc. You will have to spend money to learn but the money you spend on learning skills will ultimately pay you. You don't even have to spend thousands of dollars to learn, you can learn anything you want by spending just $40-$50.

Find a new version of yourself by investing in yourself. If the skill you have learned is not helping you to earn, you can use your skills in different ways, such as by creating videos or bog tutorials.

Try Job Sites

I use LinkedIn. I know the job portals like Indeed, Naukri, Monster, JobBait, Careercloud, Dice, CareerBuilder, Jibberjobber, and Glassdoor. I have also left my resume on local job portals (job portals available in my home country). If you do not have a job, joining a job portal site will help you get a job because a lot of agencies hire through these job portals and you can easily find jobs. You might have to pay money on some of these job sites but that will pay you back in the long run.

Career Development Tips

Professional development means developing yourself in a way that you become fit for the job market, you can attempt high-paying jobs, you are placed in a high position, and you can earn a lot of money. Professional development is mainly associated with building up your knowledge, skills, and expertise so that you can excel in your career. Imagine, you are just a graduate and work as a front desk manager, how can you be promoted to a higher position? Well, you will have to enroll in the Master's Program, so that you are equipped with better education, and you can undergo relevant training in order to become fit for the better paying job. Imagine you are just a graduate teaching in an elementary school. How can you teach at the university? Well, you need to go for higher education so that you can teach for higher classes. You need education and training for professional development.

How to Become Creative in Your Career

If you are not creative enough, you may not be able to stay on the job for too long and soon you will find yourself on the street looking for another job. But how do you reignite your creativity?

Visual Board: Visual board is a board that you hang on the wall with the cuttings, clippings, and sticky notes to give you ideas and inspiration and remind you of deadlines and to-do notes.

Magazines and Newspapers: Reading can help you become more creative. You can read interviews and life stories to get inspired and find your own course.

Doodle: You might not be an artist but you can sure doodle, right? Doodling can help you calm your mind by stimulating your brain. Research has established that doodling helps with cognitive function.

Documentation: Document your thoughts, ideas, feelings, and even emotions. You can even document your daydream. By doing this you will be able to open your mind to spark creativity.

How Internships Can Build Your Career

Internships have value. It helps you to get started with your career. A lot of academic faculties require you to go through internship programs before you can sit for annual exams. These faculties will calculate your internship performance and provide grading which will then be added to your final grades. Faculties that are more geared towards practical knowledge and use cases require the students to go through internship programs, for example, medical doctors, health care providers, engineers, etc. Even the faculties like journalists, teaching, etc require you to attend internship programs. When you attend an internship, you will benefit in multiple ways, one, you gain access to real job experience (because you get an opportunity to work in an organization), and you can build knowledge by working (becoming an intern means you work in an organization), you build expertise, and you also make some money (a lot of internship programs offer paid offer).

How Experience Can Help Your Career Growth

How do you gain experience? By working. How can you work, or let's say how do you get work? Through education. Therefore, education is more important than experience. Education means you build your knowledge and skills. You can work only when you have knowledge and skills, if you do not have knowledge and skills, there will be no work opportunities for you. If you don't work, how can you gain experience? Whether you want to excel in your personal life or professional life, you need education. You need money to keep your family happy, you can make money only when you have an education. Education is the basis of livelihood. If you don't have an education, you will end up becoming a blue-collar worker doing menial jobs. Well, there s nothing wrong with doing manual labor but you need to understand one thing, if you do menial jobs you have limited income.

How Not to Lose Your Job or Work?

Before I started my freelance journey, I worked for 4 different companies for 6 years. Here are a few tips for not losing your job based on my own experience.

Be punctual: If you are not punctual, your employer will not like you even if you are very good at work.

Meet the deadline: If you don’t complete your task within the deadline and if missing your deadline becomes more frequent, the employer has a good reason to fire you.

Be friendly: If you do not have a good relationship with your co-workers, a lot of backbiting will take place and you might eventually have to leave the job.

Build your skills: The job market is competitive, therefore, the employer always has a better option for the worker. In order to stay on the job consider building your skills. For example, if you are a copywriter, learning graphic design can come as a great advantage.

How to Choose a Profitable Career

Twelve years of schooling is the basic education everyone needs. However, the most important question you should answer is what after high school? Should you go for academic studies, should you go for professional training, or should you just start working? In case you decide to go to college, you should make a decision on what subject to choose.

Passion is important to building your career, however, you should also consider building a career on something that can help you make a lot of money. Let’s say you are interested in philosophy and want to study philosophy, but you do know what you are going to do after you complete your education, do you think you will easily find a job, or let’s say will you find a good-paying job?

You need to find a middle path. If your passion is something that may not make money for you, you can choose your second, or even third interest, and start building skills and knowledge on that subject.

Four Career Options For 2022

Fitness Trainer: Until recently, fitness trainers were mainly the people you could find in a gym. However, the Coronavirus pandemic changed the entire fitness industry. These days you can see a lot of fitness gurus training online through live sessions or recorded videos. You can become a fitness coach and make money from this booming industry.

Online Teaching: There is nothing that cannot be taught online. You can teach anybody, anything, and become an online teacher. You can take live classes, and provide recorded classes; you can tech through live streaming, or through recorded videos, podcasts, etc. You can teach what you are best at.

UX/UI Designer: User Experience and User Interface are very important for a website and app because these things determine the user base and visitors for any platform. Therefore, companies and agencies pay a lot of money to UX and UI designers.

Software testing: Software needs to be tested before it can be released in the market. The testing is done to find bugs and fix them. This is very in-demand skill.

Four Professional Skills to Get Jobs in 2022

Before you start your money-making journey, you need to build professional skills, which you can do by attending professional courses.

Graphic Design: Whether you are a blogger, vlogger, digital marketer, content creator, or social media influencer, you need graphic designing skills. You need graphic designing for almost all things. You need graphic designing skills even to create an Instagram post. Therefore, graphic designing is a lucrative career. You can attend graphic designing courses on Udemy, Alison, Coursera, Skillshare, Masterclass, etc.

Content Writing: You need content writing skills for almost all jobs. Even if you are a programmer, you need content writing skills to pitch your idea to your potential customers. Where should you attend this course? Well, there are numerous platforms, I recommend Future Learn, which offers university-created courses.

Video Editing: Whether you realize this or not, over the last few years, there has been a tremendous demand for video content. This demand has gotten even stronger with the evolution of video-sharing platforms.

Presentation Skills: Whether you work online or offline, you need skills to work on the jobs and generate income. Any skills will help you earn money, but not all skills are created equal. Some skills require technical skills, some skills are very hard to master, whereas some skills are relatively easy to master, yet will help you generate a lot of money. One such profitable skill is presentation skills. Whether you are a content creator, a marketer, a business owner, or even a web designer, you are required to pitch your ideas to your clients. How can you pitch your ideas, if you do not have any presentation skills?

How to Build Professional Skills to Make Money

In order to build your career and make money, you should be well trained; Here are the top platforms that you can use in order to build knowledge and improve skills. Once you have proper knowledge and skills, you can set out on Fiverr, Upwork, or any other freelancing platform.

Udemy: This is the most popular option. There are a lot of courses available, while choosing a course make sure you choose a course that has a lot of positive reviews and ratings

Alison: This is just like Udemy, but this is a completely free platform, you do not have to pay money to attend courses.
