Meripilus giganteus is a fungus commonly known as a giant polyporus or black spot, often found in large aggregations at the base of trees, although sometimes fruiting bodies are located at a distance from the trunk, parasitizing on the roots. Meripilus giganteus has circuroreal distribution in the Northern Hemisphere and is widespread in Europe.
The bases consist of numerous, rosette-like, flattened fan-shaped pilei; they are usually 50-200 centimeters in diameter and 20-80 centimeters in height. Vegetative fungus Edible fungi only at a very young stage. Older sporocarps inedible due to the thicker consistency.
