Maintaining Friendships Through Life's Messes

Maintaining Friendships Through Life's Messes

Life is messy. Yet, through many of the challenges we face, we often find our strength, our perseverance, and our resilience to overcome the difficult times.

Lawyer-turned-life coach Shari Leid chronicles dates and intimate conversations with her girlfriends, all centered around the question, What is the mess that became your message? “I spoke to 51 women who are actually in my life and I did this during the pandemic via Zoom,” Leid says. “I learned things about friends—even lifelong friends—that I had not known before. These conversations not only deepened our friendships but also became life-changing for me.”

In this episode, Shari and I discuss the importance of friendships, why we need to maintain them and Shari’s challenge to help us all deepen our relationships with our friends, The Make Your Mess Your Message Challenge. “Over the course of a year, meet with at least three people, one on one, including a life-long friend; a relative; and a new acquaintance or someone you’ve known for a while but have never shared a meal with,” she says. “This is something that everyone could do. I challenge you to meet with three people in your life to ask, What is the mess that became your message? ”Witness firsthand the miracles that unfold. I guarantee that you will not just learn something about your friend or relative that you had not known before; it will also deepen your relationship, and you will become keenly aware of how connected we all really are,” Shari says. “Recognizing how messy all of our lives are and seeing the purpose in the mess gives us the perspective that allows us to live a life filled with choice, freedom, and opportunity.”
