This going out to @BitcoinBaby who was the inspiration for sharing.
Bitcoin had reached a new All Time High in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Altcoins had yet to show any real signs that they were going to perform. We began toying with the idea of selling some of the best performing asset in our crypto portfolio
At the same time, @BitcoinBaby had started his series of posts:
[ℕ𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣] 𝕊𝕖𝕝𝕝 𝕐𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝔹𝕚𝕥𝕔𝕠𝕚𝕟 - I Sold My Bitcoin
Somewhere I ended promising @BitcoinBaby , along with @crypto newbie mom
Of course I was still working at the time and the moment passed without any action being taken.
Note: This is my second attempt at beginning this post, hence why decided to do in parts, easier to maintain the momentum.
The 2021 Strategy
This Strategy was very basic:
- HODL
- swap dead and dying for more Bitcoin and a few select Altcoins
But circumstances caused us to adjust the steadfast for a more flexible approach. We had been renting our Beach Shack for a few years and suddenly the Landlord decides to sell. At first I didn't want to buy and dismissed the idea out of hand. Don't like owning property, requires too much maintenance and not the best investment there is. The one of the real estate agent that came to do an appraisal, was shocked when I told him this. Off course they have to offer to the tenant, easy money for them.
All this just happened to coincide with the 2012 peak. Checking our wallets and other assets, realised it was more than do-able. So when I mentioned to the wife, that we could buy our beloved Beach Shack, she was over the moon. (This was another watershed moment in turning my wife from crypto skeptic into a crypto advocate. Crypto was actually able to be used for something that really mattered).
This also just happened to coincide with taking 10 months off work, as did not what to inject an experimental poison into my body. So had heaps of free time on my hands.
The process was relatively simple but very time consuming.
Sold most of our ETH, a couple of 100x baggers and the remainder of the dead and dying. We needed enough cash to have a 50% deposit. Any more would have caused questions to be asked.
We used LocalCryptos, a peer2peer crypto marketplace. Found a crypto broker/vendor that had bank accounts in 2 countries that we had bank accounts. His/Her currency of choice was Litecoin, but did ask about BitcoinCash, not interested.
Every couple of days would make a series of 6 trades. All well under the minimum reportable amount. The crypto broker/vendor would deposit fait into one the 6 bank accounts.
Took about a month to complete. Remember at the end, the little voice in my head telling me, we were selling the 20% dip. Was going against everything but managed to soldier on.
Some lessons learned for next cycle:
- use USDT/USDC to store value instead of a volatile crypto like Litecoin. Not only would it prevent loss of value during the process but there is no rush to sell
- don't listen to the mortgage broker and stop selling once we had the required deposit. Could have bought the real dip 12-18 months later.
- need to have more bank accounts in more countries
Long Service Leave - Summer 2025
Had applied for Long Service Leave and was going to take the long hot summer off.
Added bonus was they paid it out in a lump sum. This gave us some working capital. (Prefer to spend other peoples money).
Step 1
- new 13" MacBook Air to replace a 10+ year old laptop. Set up for crypto related activities only, need something a bit faster and more reliable. Oldie will still be used for other activities e.g. I am using it now to write this post ✅
- new iPad mini for general day to day activities like faucets and banking. Previous iPad mini got turned into a banana about 5 years ago ✅
- create a new ethereum address to store the USDT and USDC. Decided against DAI as no liquidity on MexC and no demand on LSC ✅
- extend our BitDefender Antivirus to include 5 mac-os and install antivirus and VPN on new devices ✅
- open some more bank accounts, here and overseas ✅
- test drive an overseas e-phone number, needed to create vendor account on LocalCoinSwap
- create email accounts without needing phone verification ✅
- create new LocalCoinSwap and MexC.com accounts with new emails
- apply vender staus with LocalCoinSwap
A Second Bite Of The Cherry
Bitcoin was back in the DCAing Out zone again. And I was still on Long Service Leave and working my way through implementing Step One.
The new laptop was still in the box but the iPad mini had MexC and LCS accounts already step up. So we were able to liquidate some Bitcoin whenever it was in the $165-$170,000 AUD zone.
Bitcoin has since dropped back down to the $155,000 AUD mark, so was able to continue with Step One and turn some of the USDT into $AUD. It was only a couple of nights ago finished researching the various email accounts and settled on 3 email accounts to use. (Setting up the MexC and LCS accounts only take a few minutes each and will be dealt with in Part Two).
Note: DCAing Out was coined by a guy who was instrumental in the setting up of B18CCS. When I told him what we were doing, he commented the we were DCAing Out. Up until that point only ever considered DCAing when buying but the principle also works the same in reverse.
Emails Without Phone Verification
In the past was able to create a gmail account without needing to have phone verification. Just needed to use a DOB that said you were under 18. The problem was you still needed an email back up. So at some point you would have to provide your phone number.
Recently started using ProtonMail which has better privacy features than what we had been using. But still need an email backup.
Then an account that was using the ProtonMail email, got itself disabled. So was forced to find an alternate that did not need phone verification.
Brave search came up with lists of 10-12. Most have since changed and needed a phone number.
Found one was completely different to the others, in that it used a back-up code for account recovery instead of using the email verification. Game changer.
This allowed us to use the @tutamail.com address for any account recovery. So we settled on a new @proton.me
and @mailfence.com account. All without the need to verify a phone number.
Note: There are also trash/burner emails available but you only get to use them once.
Laptop Setup
- after 2 months, finally remove from the box ✅
- no Apple account ✅
- no icloud ✅
- no Siri ✅
- download antivirus and VPN ✅
- admin account under an alias, plus three portfolio accounts ✅
- install the relevant Ledger Live on each portfolio account, add existing crypto accounts to Ledger Live ✅
- create new MexC account on laptop, already have Grandson's MexC account on iPad
- add various third party wallets (non urgent)
IPad Mini Setup
- install antivirus and VPN ✅
- install 3 new local banking apps and test drive. Plus the existing ones ✅
- install 3 new encrypted email apps ✅
- setup faucets etc on Safari browser using the iPad password manager. All work well with VPN except doing surveys and some times Publish0x tipping ✅
- install the "Crypto is Easy" app ✅
More Banks Accounts
- 3 new Brasilian bank accounts were established in 2024. Used Remitly to send funds while wife was visiting family. One even allows buying crypto and my wife has made a couple of Bitcoin purchases. My first post was written Feb 2020 and was called Turning a Crypto Skeptic Wife into a Crypto Advocate
- opened new 6 accounts with 3 local banks, these are primarily burner accounts and will be closed at the completion.
LocalCoinSwap
Since LocalCryptos closed down in early 2022. Briefly used LocalMonero to buy XMR. But LocalMonero also closed down November 2023.
2024 was spent searching for a good peer2peer marketplace.
Then one of the broker/vendors from LocalMonero contacted through the secure mail, to say he was now using LocalCoinSwap. LocalCoinSwap has similar setup as LocalCryptos and LocalMonero.
Gave it a test drive, bought some Litecoin from a couple of Kenyan gentlemen, for the Grandson's portfolio. The Litecoin went sent straight to his MexC account and would buy whatever was flavour of the month. The vendor creates the Buy or Sell offer.
The only down sides to buying or selling from a vendor are:
- you have to accept an offer that is made by a vendor. And the price for buying ranged on average from 5-12% above market rate. Some were even higher. Selling the price was lower by similar margins
- if you are selling you are relying on the vendor to deposit fait into your bank account to be able to complete the trade. The crypto is kept in escrow so is safe but if you don't get the funds as promised, it becomes a real hassle.
- most are in countries like Kenya and requires using money remittance services like Remitly
To become a vendor one needs to verify your phone number. Luckily my wife got herself an e-phone number under her Brasilian ID, while she was there. The number is added as a phone number on her iphone. And works a treat for sending SMS thru imessage. Will soon find out if it works for LCS.
Altseason Where Are You?
Selling Bitcoin was not part of the original 2025 Strategy. But it was always a pretty loose and flexible strategy.
Of course everything will depend on whether Altseason performs or even turns up. In particular how our new altcoin picks perform.
Bearing in mind we need to liquidate enough to meet our 2025 financial goals. So we may or may not have the options to:
- sell most or all altcoins including the blue chips if required
- buy back the Bitcoin we sold, hopefully at a big discount to what we sold for, (in 18-24 months?)
- buy back a select few blue chip alts if required (in 18-24 months?)
- buy more newer altcoins in 18-24 months
- repeat process if the 4 cycle and altseason continue to be predictable 🤞

Non-KYC On/Off Ramp
You have two options just buy/sell direct from the advertised offers. You can select country, payment, crypto and no KYC required. There is an average 5-12% premium over market rates.
Or you can make your own offer with your own premium, in other words you become a "broker/vendor". This requires a verified phone number, which is easy enough to get around. You can use a e-number, burner phone etc. The phone can even be based in another country. Plus you should use a VPN.
Note: 2024 we have been buying LTC from 3 gentlemen from Kenya. Their profile name stays the same regardless what platform we have used. But each time we send money it is to a different Kenyan phone number and name. And no they are not Kenyan princes, they are just tech savvy entrepreneurs trying to make a living. Still the irony is not lost on us but the lessons have been learned.
