When I first started on this journey down the rabbit hole, my lovely wife was what people refer to as a "Crypto Skeptic". She tolerated what I was doing but did not exactly approve and occasionally would let me know.
As a reference point. I bought our first piece of Bitcoin in July 2017, just before the Bitcoin Cash hard fork in August 2017. As a novice I found the whole process very hard and confusing. My motivation to struggle on and succeed was the 31st July deadline to own some Bitcoin so we could get free Bitcoin Cash. Without this lure of free stuff, I would have probably put the whole exercise in the too hard basket or at least on one of many To Do Later lists.
Moving on. One day I was able to convince my wife to open a Coinbase account with my Coinbase Earn referral code. So I could get some more free cryptocurrency. I don"t know whether it was my enthusiasm or the lure of free stuff that persuaded her to give it a go. I made my wife watch all the Coinbase Earn tutorial videos that were available at the time, so we could get two lots of everything.
After having completed all the tasks on Coinbase Earn, my wife made the remark that she liked the BAT/Brave Browser the best. This surprised me a little but I took it as a small win. Just filed it away for a rainy day.
One of the Coinbase Earn tasks involved downloading the Brave Browser. My wife downloaded the Brave Browser, was rewarded with $US10 of Basic Attention Token in her wallet. She loved the Browser and we both are using Brave Browser as our default browser.
My wife did try to get her website https://liario.com/ verified as a Brave publisher. But after a couple of failed attempts we realised Wordpress probably needed to be updated first. We have setup her UpHold account on her laptop browser. She is still learning about Brave Rewards, Sponsored Images.....Now my wife is comfortable with using the Brave Browser and BAT, she is even telling her family and friends about it if it comes up in conversation.
How did my wife turn from a Crypto Skeptic to passive Advocate? What was responsible for this major shift in my wife's attitude to all things crypto?
I think there was possibly due to two main catalysts.
1. The Coinbase Earn videos were a great start to introduce people with little interest to dip their toes in the cryptoverse. The videos are short, concise and explained in simple terms. They need to be because people have short attention spans when things don't really interest them that much. If I start rambling on about crypto stuff, within minutes my wife's eyes start to glaze over. Beats taking sleeping pills.
Note: Coinbase Earn is probably not as good an option anymore as it was at the beginning. The first time I used it, it only took two days to get my invite after joining the wait list. Then it took two weeks. Now it is taking months before I can watch any new tutorial videos. One person refers 4 people who refers 4 people...networking effect. Plus they like to cater for their USA customers first before opening it up to other countries. That window may have closed for people in Australia or Brasil, our network circle.
2. Brave Browser, Brave Rewards and Basic Attention Token are something ordinary people can relate to, understand and use now. They already know how to download and are familiar using their existing browser. Once they see and feel the advantages of using the Brave Browser they are more likely to experiment a little and try Brave Rewards. Once they see the magical internet money on the New Tab page grow. They may setup UpHold account. And further down the rabbit hole they go.
What I learned from all this was that to get people to dip their toes in. They needed an incentive to spend their precious time and effort. Downloading things, opening accounts....By offering them the opportunity to earn some free crypto for completing some simple tasks. Something that does not cost them any of their hard earned $$$$ or risking it on some dodgy looking platform. For us watching Coinbase Earn tutorial videos and using the Brave Browser and Brave Rewards were my wife's gateways to the cryptoverse. But also needs to have some relevance to their lives, something they can easily use.
Another Family Experience
My mum bought a computer because everyone told her she needed one. But she never used it until one day a friend of hers told her she could could find recipes and print them. Mum was away and one day told me how she had downloaded the anti-virus software onto her computer. I was impressed and a very proud son. Now my mum mainly uses her iphone and ipad. Thats enough about my mum, got to save something for another post....
I know there are other pathways? Would be interested to hear your thoughts and ideas. Has any one else had a similar experience?
Please feel free to give your feedback in the "Comments". I won't be offended. Hopefully I can learn something.
