What I have Learned
First BAT withdrawal from PublishOx - What I Found is Strange- Updated Feb 26

By Bragato18 | Bragato18 | 24 Feb 2020

Yes you actually get paid out. Reassuring to know that. First some background to my story. Or if you are impatient or time starved I don't mind if you go straight to the end of the story (thats where the tipping is, with more tips, I will be able to write my follow up Second BAT Withdrawl from PublishOx - What I Learned.

I first became aware of PublishOx on February 7  through my interest in Brave Browser and BAT (make a note of the date as it becomes relevant further into the story). I was reading a post on the BAT Community Forum by KieranAlexis called PublishOx - Earn BAT Token For Reading/Writing! Always interested in earning more BAT. Sorry KieranAlexis for not using your referral link. Didn't realise thats what its for. I am always a bit suspicious of using links.

Became a regular reader and tipper. Even making a few "Comments" and the👍. About a week ago I thought what the heck, I can do this and published my first article. Not my finest effort but I was pretty pleased with myself. Turning a Crypto Skeptic Wife into a Crypto Advocate

Most of the early ideas for the articles came from things I had tweeted or posted on facebook. Ledger Pokes Fun at Peter Schiff and Warren Buffet. I just fleshed them out some more with some research, added a few relevant photos and links. All the articles are live and I have been updating with new information or as in the early ones just adding pictures or quotation boxes to smarten them up.

My best performing post required the least amount of research, time and effort. Just needed a catchy title for "click bait" that appealed to the emotions. Who doesn't like a competition, competing for bragging rights for your crypto team. Vote For Your Favourite Crypto to be the 3rd added to LocalCryptos P2P Marketplace

My worst performing post I really enjoyed researching and writing. Learnt some stuff I didn't know. Original Faucet Gave Away 5 Bitcoin per Visitor. With only 45 views and I presume only 1 tip of .0011 DAI.

60% of my earnings actually come from reading other people's post and sharing the tip. Only 40% is generated by my posts.

To earn more for my articles I need a catchy title like Technical Analysis (TA) 101 - The Basics. Sorry but I don't think I could. Shit like that bores me to tears.

After a week of tipping and being tipped I had earned 5.507 BAT. By going to Menu in top right hand corner. Click on Dashboard. Under your Blog name click on payments. This will take you to the payments screen. The rest should be self explanatory.

Already I have earned a further 1.77592416 BAT while I waited for the transaction to be confirmed and paid.

Payment History

Viewing the transaction takes you to

I learnt all of the above and it works. I checked my BAT wallet and the transaction had showed up 15 minutes ago as promised. The payments are paid in bulk to minimise transaction fees otherwise most of my earning would have evaporated in gas fees. All good so far.

BAT Wallet

Cool someone has put 193.41835 BAT into my wallet on February 8. I loovvveeeee getting free shit. Oh no it's still pending. I must have a look and see why its still pending.

Thats a bit weird, nothing showing up. Whats this. Sponsored by AMFEIX and offering 45% APR. I will have to check it out on their website. NOT!!! Do not be tempted.

While I do have a morbid fascination with scams and ponzi schemes. I like poking and prodding things to find out how they work. Unfortunately another poster has already published his research on what happens when you are gifted with 0.01 Stellar. Sure enough on February 21, there it was. This payment actually went through so I get to keep it. But should I be curious and click on the transaction ID and I will see the link of the entity that made the transaction. Thats the bit you don't really want to click. They just want to empty your wallet.

Now we get to the weird bit. Is it a coincidence on the same day I added my BAT wallet address into PublishOx payments, a mysterious transaction shows up.

I have a fair idea how the other scammers got my Stellar wallet address. From one of the many Stellar Lumens airdrops my lovely wife and I were quick enough to participate in. I don't think it was Coinbase Earn or Keybase. Most likely that other one.

Nearly forgot. The reason I started writing this blog was to tell you the transaction fee was only 0.00000046 BAT. Total fee came to about $US1.73 of gas but because of bulk payments, my share of the gas was about $US0.000000121394. Leaving me with 5.50569954 BAT or approximately 99.9999916450224% of my earnings. Now if only the Australian Tax Office would charge a nominal tax rate of 0.0000083549776%, I would be a very happy camper.

Hope you learnt something because I certainly did. Please feel free to provide feedback in the Comments. I won't be offended too much, in fact I might even learn something.

Live Update February 25

Responding to Comments.

Thanks for your comments. It is a good sign if someone can be bothered to provide feedback or ask a question. Means that they actually read the whole thing and didn't just skip to the tipping banner.

The scam runs like this. To unlock the "prize" of pending transaction, you click transaction ID to get more info about the sender. It takes you to There is usually a link or website to go to...... to unlock or claim prize. Somewhere they will want you to verify your wallet by inputting your private key to your wallet. Once they have your private key they can empty your wallet of the BAT and any other ERC20 token. Cha Ching.

Your tokens are not actually stored on or in your wallet. They are stored on the Ethereum blockchain. The wallet just lets you see them with a nice friendly interface and send them with the use of your private key. You don't actually need your wallet to access your tokens just the public and private keys. With this scam they obviously already know the public address. Just need to convince you to give them the private key.

This scam is a slight variation on an oldie but a goodie, that has been doing the social media rounds. I came across it through a Facebook notification I received. I posted alert on PublishOx last week ALERT : Phishing Scam on Facebook

As to why I didn't add a couple more links. The post had already stretched out to a 3 minute read, 1-2 minute read is optimum. Hard to keep the punters attention for more than 2 minutes. I had spent enough time on it already? Save something for the follow up post? It was bedtime? Already covered by another blogger? Afraid someone might innocently click the link to the scammers and give them their wallet details?

If I find the post I will include the link.

Remember you don't really learn much by just reading articles, having it handed to you on a plate. The real lessons are learned by doing it yourself. DYOR.  What Does DYOR Really Mean - Guide for Beginners

Live Update February 25

Readers 528Beats, Trysty and Lemming suggested it would be helpful if I could find the other post that went into more detail on how the Stellar phantom deposit works. I apologise to readers that found this omission annoying or frustrating. It was not what the article was meant to be about. It was really meant to be about LESSON #5.  And how and why did the scammers get to use my BAT wallet public address the same day I gave it to PublishOx? My bad for not making that more obvious.

Thanks to 528Beats, Trysty and Lemming for taking the time to point that out to me through the comments. I will look you up and see what you write about.

And the missing link is XLM Holders Warning! Latest XLM PHISHING SCAN . Had trouble finding it because I was searching for Stellar not XLM.

Live Update February 26

Another version of XLM scam has surfaced. For more information read Beware od this sophisticated XLM scam. Stay Safe! . Any good virus needs to mutate to survive. This new virus strain has changed the lure. Before it required a little knowledge about wallet Transaction ID before you could find the hook and give them your private key. Probably wasn't very successful as knowledge is a good vaccine for this type of virus. So the new virus strain is targeting the more gullible newbies on social media platforms.

Stay vaccinated, be vigilant, DYOR (Do Your Own Research), report all scams you find.....

Just in case you don't fully grasp what DYOR implies. It is not need enough to read about things, thats too easy and alot is just plain garbage, useless information with catchy headlines (clickbait), rehashed old news, whatever sells. Have a look what earns the most tips on this platform.

In the end you have to actually do it for yourself, poke and prod, experiment, work it out for yourself, watch a youtube video and have another go.

Quote of the Day @Bragato18

You will never learn to swim by reading "Learn to Swim" books, watching YouTube videos, or asking Mr Google "How to Swim". At some point you actually have to get in the water and have a go.
