Learning how to code in my middle age - Last week before the final project

23 Sep 2020 1 minute read 5 comments NewToCrypto

I finished Week 7 (SQL) this morning. Week 7 was somewhat of a disappointment to me. I was hoping to write lots of pure SQL queries, but instead, one of the two assignments for the week required writing SQL queries within the Python framework. Why? I...

Sort of finished (but not really) Week 6 Python

11 Sep 2020 1 minute read 5 comments NewToCrypto

This week's been rough. After a nice three-days break from coding, courtesy of the Labour-Day weekend, I started working on the last Python assignment on Tuesday at 0900 hrs. Here is what I had to do:1) Import two CSV files that have the names and nu...

Learning how to code in my middle age - Week 6 [Python]

2 Sep 2020 1 minute read 5 comments NewToCrypto

I finished watching the Week 6 lecture yesterday and started working on the assignment this morning. We are mostly redoing the previous assignments we've submitted (done in C) in Python. I'm comparing the C codes and Python codes and just shaking my...

Learning how to code in my middle age - Done with C for now!

31 Aug 2020 1 minute read 5 comments NewToCrypto

I just finished the Week 5 assignment after almost two weeks of suffering. It was the toughest! Maybe Tideman from Week 3 is worse but that one was optional and I didn't finish it so who knows. Seriously, this assignment made me question if I should...

Last week of C

20 Aug 2020 1 minute read 0 comments NewToCrypto

How a minimalist might invest in cryptocurrency

I’ve been coding for just over a month now. I’ve been at it pretty much every day, except for a day or two of a complete break. I wish I could say that I am getting a hang of it, but I’m still as confused as ever. In the last post, I mentioned that I...

To me, the glass is always half full when it comes to coding. I wrapped up Week 2 this afternoon. I spent a good chunk of the day trying to solve the optional assignment. I got half of it right. The other half, not so much. I bet It’s one of those th...

How Preseaech decides what is and what isn't a legitimate search isn't clear at all. Frustrated, I stopped using it after a couple of weeks. They need to manage user experience and expectations if they wish to grow.

I've seen my shares of badly-desingned apps. Also, I've done several UAT testing of in-house apps and websites so hopefully I know what to look for when I'm designing my own apps/websites. TBH, I really enjoy testing, like way more than coding, lol. I'm looking for a position where my strength and skills, i.e. data analysis, QA, project management and a little bit of coding, can be useful right now as I build my first webpage from scratch. I gave up on learning JavaScript last year, but I think I can handle it now...it looks really similar to C. Do you like JS? Anyway, our govt has been overly generous so I won't be out on the street at least until next spring, lol. I wish your transition to working for the evil corp to self-employment will be smooth!

Agreed. I've been using JS snippets I found online to automate Google sheet updates for years. Now with better understanding, I think I can even write my own codes to do the same or better.

I like the simplicity (code-wise; not on resources) of Python. It's suitable to quickly write something to test a concept, I think. But it can be very hackish and can encourage bad habit. I be writing really crappy codes and Python be like nodding violently and pushing me to just run the damn code. I'm like are you...sure? And it runs! I won't be coding anything critical in Python for sure. It's too permissive. But I'm just a beginner coder so I might change my mind later.

Thanks! Yeah, I think that's why this course introduces us to three completely different languages: C, Python and SQL. Different languages are suited to different tasks. I'm hoping to lean JavaScript after this course since I'm interested in web dev. Thanks for reading/commenting and have a nice day.

Totally agree with what you said. I think it would be easier to copy and paste Python codes even without understanding what's beneath them. It's useful in that way but also maybe a bit dangerous?
